For years, fans of the legendary OP-1 Field have been waiting for a software version – now it seems to be happening! Teenage Engineering has announced that they will be releasing the popular synthesizer as OP-1 Field VST. The software version will bring all the familiar synthesizer engines, sampler, tape mode and even the effects section into a DAW-compatible environment. In the mood for SEMthing special? Try the NRSynth Solo, a made-to-order Oberheim SEM recreation with some useful new features. In 1974, Oberheim released the Synthesizer Expander Module. Better known as the SEM, the little white single-voice analog synth was intended to be used as a expander along with Tom’s DS-2A digital sequencer. The SEM has since taken on a life of its own, being incorporated into polyphonic synths like the Four Voice and Eight Voice, and its incredible filter is now famous in its own right. Roland’s RS-09 string machine becomes AudioThing RES-09, complete with per-note tuning, effects, and additional controls. People may crow over the Roland RS-505 Paraphonic string machine, but I’d honestly rather have an RS-09. It’s simpler yet just as lush, with one of the best ensemble effects ever made. I even had one, restoring it over a long summer to something resembling its former glory. I sold it, which makes me sad.
