  1. In the mood for SEMthing special? Try the NRSynth Solo, a made-to-order Oberheim SEM recreation with some useful new features. In 1974, Oberheim released the Synthesizer Expander Module. Better known as the SEM, the little white single-voice analog synth was intended to be used as a expander along with Tom’s DS-2A digital sequencer. The SEM has since taken on a life of its own, being incorporated into polyphonic synths like the Four Voice and Eight Voice, and its incredible filter is now famous in its own right. Without further ado, let’s catch up on the latest and greatest stories from the world of musical technology this week: Synclavier was once the pinnacle of music production, so far ahead of everything else on the market in almost every department at a price few could even dream of owning. 9. Find out where you can see – and even play! – the world’s rarest synths at these amazing synthesizer museums. YouTube demo videos can only take you so far. While an amazing service, no video is going to compare to seeing and playing classic and rare synthesizers for yourself. The problem is where to do it. Unless you’re fabulously wealthy with a fleet of rare synth gems hidden away in a home studio, you’re going to have a hard time getting your hands on instruments like the Roland Jupiter-8, Yamaha CS-80, or EMS VCS3. That’s where synthesizer museums come in. Much like regular museums, synthesizer museums assemble rare and coveted synths, drum machines, and other gear und…

  10. Ten years after the original Deepmind, Behringer release the Deepmind X, a new version of their very first synth! Has it been a decade already? I remember playing a Deepmind at SynthFest U.K., when the boys from Midas also demoed a VR interface that was in development. That application never surfaced, but the love for the Deepmind was always strong for many users. So much so that the demand for a new version grew stronger, year by year. Well, today Behringer surprised everyone outside their inner circle with the announcement of the Deepmind X Series. All three Deepmind form factors, the 6, the 12 and the Desktop, have a new paint job, new end cheeks and… well, that’s abou…

  13. Roland’s RS-09 string machine becomes AudioThing RES-09, complete with per-note tuning, effects, and additional controls. People may crow over the Roland RS-505 Paraphonic string machine, but I’d honestly rather have an RS-09. It’s simpler yet just as lush, with one of the best ensemble effects ever made. I even had one, restoring it over a long summer to something resembling its former glory. I sold it, which makes me sad. But today’s news about the AudioThing RES-09, a new emulation of the 1979 string machine, has me smiling again… The post AudioThing RES-09: One of Roland’s Lushest Analog Synths Finally Gets an Emulation appeared first on gearnews.com. Its intuitive interface and robust feature set have attracted a diverse user base, from those at the very start of their journey to seasoned pros like Martin Garrix and Metro Boomin. 25. Solid State Logic has been producing affordable USB audio interfaces for the past four-or-so years, its SSL 2, 2+ and 12 bringing a slice of SSL quality and kudos to even the humblest of recording rigs. These desktop boxes are well-matched to the needs of a small home studio or mobile setup, but are inadequate for producers with bigger fish to fry – those recording full bands, or working with large amounts of analogue gear, for example. 30. Alongside chorus and flanger effects, phasers complete the trilogy of popular “modulation” effects. Modulation effects change the texture sound over time, and phasers are often used to give sounds a smooth textural movement. Unlike chorus and flanger effects, phasers don’t use delay lines to create their characteristic sounds, rather using a special type of filter, and give a slightly less dramatic result compared to flangers. Phasers can be used to add stereo width to sounds, thin them out in the mix, and give them an intriguing textural movement. In this guide we’ll show you how to use phaser effects both creatively and in a mixing context to help you make your best tra…
