That 1p and 2p coins are only legal tender upto a value of 20p.

5p and 10p coins upto £5.

20p and 50p coins upto £10.

My teenage daughter has been kidnapped, and the people I work with may be involved in both.

Thats not true. They are still legal tender but some shops are just picky fuckers. My local shop takes what ever I give them and sometimes towards the end of the month it can be quite alot of 1's and 2's.

most take almost any amount as long as they are bagged correctly

£1 in 1 or 2 p

£5 in 5 or 10 p

£10 in 20 or 50 p

It is true dude, trust me I'm a lawyer.

The thinking behind it was to stop people going down to the insland revenue to pay their tax with shrapnel, which people were doing more and more to piss the revenue off.

It's up to individual shops whether they accept it, but as far as legal tender goes, it's not once above one of the thresholds.

lol thats not right im sure ive spent more than 20p with coppers

  • CTW Moderators

you can spend more than 20p with coppers, but it isnt legal tender, therefore the shop does not HAVE to accept it, although any shopkeeper in their right mind isnt going to refuse business is he/she?

Tresh you never cease to amaze me!

Well I'll just say, if anyone walked into my casino with loads of 1's, 2's, 5's or whatever, I'd tell the cashier to take them.

In a casino..ALL money is good (as long as its not out of circulation)

Then we can safely say your casino is not a barometer of what is legal tender and what isn't.

So what you're saying is that I've got a jar full of pennies and 2p's that I cant exchange anywhere if I take more than 20p at a time.

Nope, sorry, dont believe you. I refuse to believe that coinage becomes untenderable in certain quantities.

A bank would change it for you.

But my point is that legally it is not tender and I don't really care whether you believe it or not it still remains the case.
