 The good news however, is that most of em wont bother - seems only Tidytrax and the Next Generation labels (Next Gen/Blatant Beats/Stimulant Records) care about it, and will take action over it, in the hard dance scene (dont know about others tho)

clubs already pay whatever it is that secures rights to use tracks - dunno how it works, but it was brought up on the Tidytrax forums and apparantly its legal to use any music at a licensed venue

Might be worth emailing Rowan and Meza on gurn and see what they had to do to be allowed to run their Pick a Mix.

Blimey, just found this thread again - 20+ years since I started it! Half of us were still on dial-up and MSN Messenger back then wondering if PRS (Performing Right Society) were going to come knocking.

Anyway, for anyone stumbling on this in 2026 wondering the same thing I was in 2004 - here's where it actually landed:

Short version: we were right to be worried, but the industry finally built a proper fix.

Mixcloud is the answer. They went and did the thing we were hoping someone would do back then - got proper licensing deals with Universal, Sony, Warner and 250+ indie labels, plus PRS and the publishing societies. They pay royalties on every play, so as a DJ you don't have to clear a single track yourself. It's the only mainstream platform actually built and licensed for full-length mixed sets. If you want to upload commercial mixes anywhere and sleep at night, that's it.

SoundCloud never solved it. Their position is basically unchanged from what we were all guessing in this thread - if there's copyrighted material in your mix, you technically need explicit permission from the rights holder to upload it. No blanket licence. That's why mixes still randomly vanish there.

Self-hosting (which is what we ended up landing on back in the day) is now honestly the riskiest option of the lot, not the safest - you're carrying all the exposure yourself with none of the cover a licensed platform gives you.

So - 20 years of "just wait, someone'll sort it" and it turns out the answer was Mixcloud. Wish I could tell 2004-me to stop worrying about hosting it on CTW and just wait a decade or so 😀.
