Im not religious and i dont beleive that a girl called Mary got pregnant magically and gave birth to a magical son called Jesus, so why celebrate the birth of him? I understand that christians and other people that belive in jesus celebrate it but why do non religious people?

 

Sorry to spoil the xmas spirit but its just on my mind.

I celebrate christmas as a time of goodwill, you getta see your family and friends, givin and receivin gifts and have a good time. As far as i'm concerned it's got [censored] all to do with any pokey religion, it's just about havin a good happy time.

but it does have somthin to do with religion. Jesus was apparently born on xmas day and some people decided we should celebrate the occasion. We give and receive presents because of the 3 wise men givin pressies but the majority of people dont care about the 3 wise men and Jesus, they just like to give and receive presents and spend time with there family. No-one would get any presents if the religious story didnt exist.

tbh christmas has ended up being a mish mash of a lot of things, it's not just the christian religion and jesus which means we give presents and have xmas trees and the like. Anyway like you say i don't really care about that religious bollocks, it's all a load of nonsense anyway. It's just about friendship, goodwill and havin a good time.

Because as far as i'm concerned xmas isn't about the religious stuff, it may have started with that but i don't think that's what it's about anymore.

I think you will find that Christmas was actually a pagan festival, and the Christians hi-jacked it to make it easier for them to foist there religion onto the general public. And then crash commercialism came along and liberated it for everyone under the age of 14

I love xmas cos you see all ur family and pals and so many ppl in ze world are celebrating and are at peace all at the same time.Everyone is re-joicing! hallaluya!! and because santa brings me lots of presents too... obviously

Have you ever thought about the whole present thing too? I mean, you in affect buy your own presents don't you? You all find out how much you are gonna spend on each other ( family ) and then spend the same.

 

Even so, it would not be anywhere near as much fun if you didn't buy presents for each other.

Pah, speak for yourself superxyber!!! I spent over 200 quid on other people, but the value of all my pressies is probably less than half of that. Do I care? Nope!! I like Xmas because it's a great excuse for me to spoil my family. It is truly greater to give than receive

I celebrate Xmas because it's a great excuse to see my family (who I only really see once or twice a year) and buy gifts for people you care about. That's all it is, an excuse. I am an atheist so I couldn't care less about the origins of the tradition.

Your question is a bit like saying "why have sex if you don't want to have children?" Who cares where Xmas comes from ... everyone can enjoy it. I received an Xmas card from a Jewish neighbour, nuff said.

Yeah but we would find a different excuse instead! This is true of all kinds of occasions - bonfire night, Halloween, Valentines Day... not just religious events.

I mean the Guy Fawlkes story (albeit factual) is neither current nor particularly relevant in the 21st century, but it's a bloody good excuse for a load of people to get together and set things on fire!!!

I'm a cynic anyways .. Looking at all the [censored] there is in the world and things that happen ... IF there was a god/jesus .. he/she of many faces etc., why are they happening?
