That is pretty much what I was guessing it would be. What about the difference between "Recording studio mixers", and "DJ mixers". Do many mixers have phrase samplers, and do DJs use them?

What about the difference between "Recording studio mixers", and "DJ mixers".

The key element of a DJ-friendly mixer is the ability to assign one or both tracks to the headphones independently of the main output.

 

In other words, you need to be able to listen to one track on the headphones while another thing comes out of the speakers. I.e. the ability to cue. This is actually possible on some "studio" mixers / mixing desks, but not all.

 

Nearly all DJ mixers have 3 or 4 outputs.

(1) main output (for the main sound system)

(2) cue (for headphones)

and optionally:

(3) line out / "rec" (like the main output, but for connecting to a Minidisc recorder or whatever)

(4) booth (for connecting to a monitor in the DJ booth)

 

Finally it's almost essential to have a crossfader, because this saves you from the trouble of moving two faders at once when you want to fade between tracks. Though some DJs prefer not to bother with the crossfader.

To be honest with you mate everyone keeps shitting on about technics 1210's, yes they are a mint deck and i wouldn't doubt them for a second cos every club use's them but you really want to get a hold of some vestax pdx2000 turntables,they are future technology with their DC motor they hold there mix and pitch aposesed to the tekkies where they have a AC motor hence the drift now and again.I honestly think clubs will soon change as some allready have....

Also there is no longer a Technics name for hi-fi equip and there's a possibility they will loose there dj equipt name

I started out on my mates 1200's and my own shitty belt drive jobbies. To be honest, i'm glad i learnt to mix on the belt drives - the way i saw it was ''if i can do it on these, i can do it on anything'' ... and it was true. After about a year, i got myself a pair of 1210's and i was as happy as a pig in [censored], and to be honest, i think i appreciated them more too. When i got my SL's, i sold my belt drive jobbies on to my mates bird - she then learnt to mix on them too and now is DJing at clubs across the country - so it just goes to show you don't need to have the bollox set up to start with - you just need something that'll get you to grips with the basics. Same goes for a mixer - 2 channels and a x fader is all you really need - the less complicated the better.

i lasted 2 months on my sonys, the 1210's are simply million miles better, as for the vestax, there mixers are PHAT but there decks are shite

 

my mate has just got a residency at GCyoung guns at bed in sheff, unfortunatly they are sponcered by vestax and have there decks:( he says they are the worse decks he has ever used and is trying to take his 1210's instead!!
