That's the main difference between being a lifeguard and a life saver AFAIK. Life savers (ie, Bronze Medallion) only have a moral duty to help people so could sit back and watch if they really wanted.

 

Luckily I've never really had to help anyone. Caught a baby who'd fallen into a pool once and that's it. Everything else has been simple first aid and bollocking people with my acme tornado - The loudest whistle in the world. They never played up twice.
