Slinky @ The Opera House, Bournemouth

Room 1 (hard house)

Andy Farley, Paul Glazby, Paul Maddox, Tim Lyall

Room 2 (drum & bass)

Hype, Orbit, Element, Marlo, MC Sky

It's a bit more "hard house" orientated than I would usually go for, but I haven't been to Slinky for a while and it's always a good night. The only guy I've seen before is Tim Lyall (resident DJ) who is great; however I have heard good things about the others.

I am informed that Glazby/Maddox/Farley play the more technoey end of HH...?

I'm definitely going to this, with a handful of mates I haven't seen for a while. Just thought I'd stick up a post, in case anyone else happens to be in the Bournemouth area and fancies a good bosh / stomp / whatever it is you are supposed to do to hard house... smile.gif

It was a top night. As always, The Opera House had an electric atmosphere, and thankfully it wasn't too packed, so there was plenty of room to dance. thumbsup.gif

Hard house isn't usually my thing, but overall the music was of a pretty decent standard. It stayed pretty dark, gritty & hammering all night ... and the music got pretty fucking fast by the end!

Tim Lyall

Unfortunately I missed out on the first set. I've seen Tim a few times before and he's usually pretty good.

Paul Maddox

Some fantastic tunes from the word go. I was glued to the dancefloor for a good hour; this really got me in the mood. Paul definitely played some of the best tracks of the night - some "proper" techno too. Not so good towards the end of his set - some of the tracks were horribly cliched (cheesy 303 sounds and so on) but I guess this is a matter of taste. My only other reservation was that there were far too many breakdowns - some quite extended parts of his set sounded very "stop-start". Still, impressed overall, would see again!

Andy Farley

Mixed feelings about this guy ... it was very tough & dark, which is good, and also a lot more relentless than Maddox. His style is bloody minimal though. Minimal I like, techno I like, but it didn't seem that varied to me. Still, there were some absolutely scorching tracks. And a few very-average ones - plodding "offbeat" basslines and little momentum or originality. Impressed overall - a bit more variety and this could have been right up my street.

Paul Glazby

God damn the music got fast towards the end! I did enjoy what I heard but wasn't on the dancefloor for much of his set. What I heard was pretty decent. Again, will have to check him out again another time to work out whether I think he's any good or not.

Overall verdict: I'm pleased that hard house has moved on a bit since I used to be into it. The tunes were a bit hit-or-miss, but more "hit" than "miss". Overall it was "dirty and dark" rather than "bouncy and cheesy", thank god! There was a nice techno swing to some of the tracks too. I didn't go with high expectations but I had a really good night overall. smile.gif

and - what i cant praise slinky enuf for is that it seems to be one of the few clubs that progresses the music properly though out the night so if it do finish with banging hardhouse, at least it wasnt hardhouse from the start

^ yeah that. It would have been shite if it had gone too-fast too-early. Also, although (IMHO) Maddox played the best tunes of the night, I couldn't have coped with all those breakdowns later on in the night.

The night ended at 3am, and I do feel that if it had gone on any longer, the music would have had to be a bit more varied to sustain my interest. I don't think I could go to nights like this week-in week-out, but I must admit I did enjoy it as a bit of a change from the norm.

The techno night we went to (Billy Nasty / Petrae Foy) was very well balanced, going from tech-house / funky techno to hammering (but still groovy) hard stuff.

The music is usually pretty varied at Slinky: even on the more trance-orientated nights, e.g. Paul Van Dyk (who is not my cup of tea whatsoever), the residents have balanced it out with some quality house & techno.
