An avatar is a god in another form, eg Human. As we have no comprehendable way of imagining a god, they come to us as an avatar (if you believe that sort of thing).

 

The reason they're called avatars in cyberspace is because some guy thought that the geeky terms used weren't impressive enough. I guess it's fairly apt, as you can choose to appear as anything or anyone you like.
