Why is the music industry male-dominated?

 

Most bands are male; nearly all DJs and dance music producers are male. Throughout history most accomplished composers have been male. Even clubbing (I think?) has a slightly disproportionate male following. Is it because women who are that passionate about music are in the minority? Or have they just got more sense than to pursue such an ultimately fruitless hobby?

I mainly ask because it's not often I meet women who are as passionate about music as myself. Whereas I have loads of male friends who share my obsession!

So why is it?
