I'm thinking of getting one of these Pioneer CDJs.

There's quite a big price hike from the 800 to the 1000, but I'm not convinced I need all the extra features. I'm not bothered about about looping, digital outputs, memory cards etc...

I tried out both models in a shop last night and was very pleasantly surprised by how similar it is to manipulating vinyl. I read somewhere that the 800 is not so good for scratching, is this true? They both had a very similar feel to me.

I know I'm a bit behind the times here, but having finally got round to trying out these CDJs with the scratch jog wheels, I'm blown away by how easy it is to cue up the tracks, and how fun the interface is!

Is there any reason why I should spend the extra on the 1000? I know that, in theory, it has a finer/subtler response, more precision etc ... but can anyone tell the difference?

The main difference IMO between the 800 and 1000 is that the 1000 has waveform display, which basically means that it gives a graphical readout of all the highs and lows of the tracks, so you can see exactly when a breakdown starts and ends etc, as you can on vinyl..

Also with the 1000 you can save all your cue points and loops onto a memory card, which is very handy when playing out as you just stick the card into their CDJ's and everything is there waiting for u.

I've got an 800 which i'm quite happy with, but my mate andy (who u met i think at the last serious...Bald...Gold Tooth?) he's got a pair of 1000's and I have played around on them quite a bit. Very nice piece of kit.

I've not noticed any difference between the two as far as cueing, and although i dont scratch, i cant imagine there being any difference between the two on that...

Ahhh, you're mates with "Goldie"! Yes I've met Andy a couple of times now.

Cheers for the info. Good point about the waveform display - yes that's definitely a big selling point.

defo the wave display is the main selling point, and not the other features. As for saving cue points to memory cards i never bother as do it on the fly. (the only thing i've used them for is so i can get to the coca cola jingle on the tidy boys live at tw2 cd as i love that bit so much

the other differences are:

  • seperate dials for brake/start up speeds

  • far better method of reversing etc

  • better accuracy (can't remember how accurate cdj800 is but i know u can choose between 10% and 100% - cdj1000 has 6%, 10%, 16% 100%[24% not 100% if mk1]. 6% has accuracy to 0.02%, 10% and 16% to 0.5% and 1% for 100% ptich range.

  • jog wheel on cdj800 is far too free moving for me

  • buttons look and feel more professional

thats all i can think of off the top of my head as i didn't use my cdj800 much b4 selling it on (was bought as part of a bulk lot to sell on)

I was going to post a gag about flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality but it's just flogging a dead horse.

Get the Denon.

I own a 100s and a 1000 and the 1000 only ever gets used when I take it to gigs with me cos I prefer the cdj100s in practically all aspects

What aspects?

I tried a CDJ-100S too, but it can't compete with the 800/1000 in terms of ease/intuitiveness/subtlety of cueing...? I'd be impressed if someone managed to make a CDJ that brought you any closer to the feel of vinyl mixing.

Cheers for the advice. Another factor is that I'll like to get a reasonably "industry standard" deck. The Pioneer CDJ-1000s seem to be becoming the most popular in clubs from what I've seen...?

It's all very well having the best CDJ on the market, but then having a gig and having to get used to something different...?

(Just bearing this in mind for the next time I blag a gig ... Halley's Comet is due any time now...)

whats the difference between those new technics cd decks and the cdj?

granted it looks the dogs danglys, but is it as functional as a 1000? (mk1 or mk2) I had a quick look at the specs and I couldnt find any waveform display (or anything similar) is it supposed to exist?

Andy i have a cdj800 and have used the 1000. i would personally go for the 800 as you can get em for £400 now. there is nothing on the 800 that will be different on the 100 when you play in clubs.

and as for the wave display, i wouldn't worry about that, you sould really know you tunes well enough not to need one.

the 800 actually has more features over the 1000 mk1 i think.

but what ever you choose i would agree definitely get a pioneer they are the industry standard

Tony,

I took your advice and plumped for the CDJ800. thumbs (and saved £250 compared with the price of the 1000mk2!)

I had a damn good play with both models in the shop and decided I was totally happy with the 800. Frankly I wasn't that impressed by the 1000's waveform display anyway, and I'm not interested in any of the other bells and whistles.

I've been caning my 800 for the last few hours ... very very pleased with my purchase! smile
