I assure you that that's quite normal. Cheques don't clear immediately, even if they make a telephone call to your bank. Presumably at the point where they tried to clear the cheque, there were insufficient funds in your account...?

The Cheque guarantee should honour it tho surely? then its up to the bank to fleece u with bank charges

Yes, it sounds as though the bank effectively paid for the CDs for you, but fined you for the privelige.

 

I don't think a guarantee card has anything to do with checking your balance prior to the transaction!
