I know most of you won't care, and many of you will laugh, but it looks like Spurs fans face another summer of being laughed at by everyone as we fail to sign striker after striker

jus 2 take the piss even more;

RELAX SPURS.. HERE COME VIDUKA AND PHILLIPS They'll join Rivaldo, Morientes and Ricketts will they, Glenn?

By John Cross

GLENN HODDLE will spark another summer of transfer madness at White Hart Lane by trying to sign Leeds' top scorer Mark Viduka.

Hoddle has tried to ease the club's dressing-room discontent by promising his unhappy stars that he will land some big signings.

And he has targeted Aussie striker Viduka as the spearhead to revive the club's flagging fortunes.

Brighton's Bobby Zamora and Kevin Phillips of Sunderland are also possible targets, but Tottenham boss Hoddle may have another difficult summer in the transfer market after the club failed to land some of world football's top names over the past 12 months.

Last summer Spurs failed with ambitious transfer coups for Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo and Real Madrid superstar Fernando Morientes.

They both snubbed the chance to join the ailing North London giants, much to Hoddle's embarrassment.

He eventually signed Viduka's Leeds team-mate Robbie Keane for £7million, but only after missing out on Michael Ricketts, who eventually joined Middlesbrough from Bolton in January.

Republic of Ireland striker Keane has proved to be one of the few successes in a hugely disappointing season for Tottenham and, embarrassingly for Hoddle, he initially did not even want to buy him and only did so on the recommendation of director of football David Pleat.

Tottenham tried to sign Viduka before he moved to Leeds for £10million three years ago. And it will be vital for Hoddle's future that they do pull off at least one major signing this summer.

Former England manager Hoddle, who is not renowned for his man-management skills, has struggled to maintain spirit in the dressing-room as their campaign has slumped from bad to worse, culminating in Saturday's 5-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.

Tottenham also made a move for Birmingham's on-loan French international striker Christophe Dugarry who is a free agent this summer.

But World Cup winner Dugarry seems certain to sign a contract with Birmingham. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has given Hoddle an £8m transfer budget and they believe Leeds are ready to sell because of their financial crisis. Hoddle is a huge admirer of Viduka and believes the big striker could rekindle his old partnership with Keane to great effect.

But once again Hoddle faces a battle to persuade Viduka - now regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe - to join Spurs after another hugely disappointing season at White Hart Lane.

In stark contrast, and despite Leeds' troubles, Viduka has maintained an incredible scoring rate during his team's brush with relegation and his form has once again alerted Italian giants Roma, who have tracked him for more than two years.

So it looks like it could be another entertaining transfer chase for Spurs this summer as they are also determined to strengthen central midfield and their defence, which has leaked goals at an alarming rate recently.

Tottenham have an ageing and expensive squad who are still on big wages and their under-achievement this season has called Hoddle's own future into question after he has failed to make any impact during his two-year reign.

I'm not fussed. We've got a better team than last year, we've got more points than last year, it's just the usual string of injuries that have hit the squad after xmas and the failure to sign people in the Jan transfer window that meant the difference between 8th to 10th and challenging for europe.

It's dissappionting - but better than other (more fancied) teams like Leeds, Man City, Fulham, Southampton, who're all behind us. Even Boro, who whipped us last week after a joke of a sending off.

We're strapped for cash, but I think we bought ok last summer. Who can say Keane wasn't a good singing, and Bunjevic was good too. Acimovic hasn 't really broken through, but with Carr, Keane, RIchards, Davies, Keller, King, Gardner, Redknapp, Etherington, and Poyet (tho he;'s getting on) we have some classy players, most of whom are young.

Now we're rid of Sherwood, and should be of Freund, Thatcher, and a fwe more uselesss players we have at least got a chance of going somewhere. But with the Scum, Gooners, Liverpoolm the Toon and Chelsea above us, we can't really complain. With the current squad we'll be fighting next season for the last uefa cup spot with Blackburn, Everton, and Boro....

So there tongue.gif

The usual string of injuries?

Well if Hoddle is gonna sign players like Redknapp and Ziege, it's their job to spend half the season on the treatment table. With Anderton never playing more than 20 games a season and Richards not exactly the most non-injury prone of players, it will be exactly the same story next season. Maybe even relegation. We don't have a good team and especially not a competent manager.

Well said Guyster, we could be a lot worse off, but just a degree of consistency would be nice, and maybe a season where the medical team weren't consistently overworked. It would just be nice to not have people like Wub having something over us.

Still, what are we to do?
