if the world was any other shape, then the magnetic fields that keep it in orbit around the sun, and that maintain the moons orbit, wouldn't work and the earth would go flying off into space and we'd all die

I could give you the real reason, but it's long and boring. Basically it's all about gravity and spin. BTW - the earth isn't round. It's slightly egg-shaped, thus giving the wobble of seasons...

in case they hit their heads when climbing into the cockpits.
