To deny something doesn't mean your lieing.

 

For instance, I can deny I'm a woman. That's not lieing - and how can I get caught out for saying that?

No, they are not both as bad. Lying is worse than denying. There isn't, by definition, anything wrong with denying.

 

But if you deny something, and happen to be telling a lie with that denial, then the *bad* act is the lie itself.

 

As used in the example further up this thread, I can deny I'm a woman, 'cos I'm a bloke. What's wrong with that? Nowt.

I would say they pretty much go hand in hand. I think that people denying that they ever lie is fairly common aswell.
