every time i hear a good funky house set i go up and congratulate the dj 4 not making me vomit and he always turns around and says half the tunes wernt technically funky house tunes

 

imo funky house is a genre that only works well when its watered down

I'm not so hung up on this pigeon-holing, e.g. deciding whether something technically is or isn't "funky house".

 

I tend to like deep, dubby, funky music, be it techno, house, tribal, progressive or whatever...

 

I think it is a dodgy preconception that "funky" music must therefore be cheesy and happy. To me, the funk is about the rhythm - rolling percussion and syncopated basslines. Maybe a cheeky/quirky element too. But funky house music can be well dark too!

 

Not sure what you mean by "watered down" Laurence...? I certainly like my funky house to be stripped back and techy.

Agreed! It's the same as hearing some blond tart sing nonsense over cheesy Euro-trance, or some idiot rapping about "niggers" and "bitches", or those dodgy sped-up vocal samples in hard house tunes.
