i'm getting back into guitar playing and i've started practicing with a friend who is a telented psytrance producer.

 

i don't know if anybody here is that familiar with psytrance but we're hoping to collaborate on some psytrance with heavy guitar - download 'dance of the witches' by 's.u.n. project' to get an idea.

 

anyway, the point? most of my experience guitar playing is college rock, stones covers, pentatonic blues scales - simple stuff like that.

 

i'd like to start exploring and practicing a more appropriate guitar genre and i'm thinking heavy metal is probably going to be a good place to start.

 

does anybody have any recommendations for scales/modes etc. i should concentrate on to give me a kick start?

I do play the guitar but unsure on what chords would work best for this type of sound. I would of thought a distortion pedal of some sort would be what your looking for and then just play around with a few chords and see which ones you think would work well. My old man has a pedal and it makes some fab sounds which I think would sit quite well in that sort of music.

thanks jon. with all the plug-ins we have access to, it's like owning every pedal ever made plus i have my ibanez tube screamer as a backup...

 

the problem is i try just riffing using the scale i know and it sounds totally out of place...

www.tabcrawler.com - may have a few tunes on there which u could see the kind of chord proggressions would suit ur style of music, then just mess around with them to come up with something original ?

if you want a reet nice heavy sound try toneing the top 2 strings down a note this will make everything sound alot better...well for that heavy sound anywayz...

^ you mean tune to EBGDGD? is this tuning common? i need to investigate...

 

i could just tune the whole guitar down a half step or a step i guess

and if you think of every heavyband in the last 10 years....

 

thats how they get that sound!!!

i play guitar.. im not familiar with the tunes your on about but i reckon you should use natural/natural minor minor scales...

 

pentatonic will sound too bluesey

myxolydian will be too jazzy/indie..

 

 

failing that... look up radiohead tabulature... very useful
