A serious load of wank more like.

I really can't comprehend why anyone would actually be arsed about something like this.

Some people just need to lighten up.

What is the point of having a username, when people insist on using people's real names in posts?

If I wanted my real name posted all over CTW, I would have made it my username (hence me being called Blink, cos that is who I am)

Why do people insist on replying to people's posts using their real name?

The only reason I can think of is so that they can show off how popular and "in" they are, cos they know someone's real name.

Yup that pretty much sums it up.

This post is rubbish, especially for peeps who live in london, as we probably know each other better than others. i.e. I would never call Elly bloody ELLS BELLS on the board or off. Just like I have never ever called kev creamy in my entire life. Its not a competion to look popular, who cares its a website confused.gif

bored now

My initial point, I suppose, was that I have a nickname on boards, because that is how I want to be referred to on boards (as it happens, it is also how I like to be referred to in real-life).

Supposing, in real life, I was refered to as "Fred", i would still want people to refer to me as "Blink" on the boards, because that is the persona I have on the board. I can understand why people think it is more appropriate to refer to people by their real names, I just wonder if people actually check that it is OK to use their real names on the boards before doing it, it is, is it not, a matter of courtesy?

[And no, I didn't think it was that serious, which is why I didn't put it in serious issues]

It is quite embarrassing actually talking about members, especially when you are in mid-flow and then say "yeah and what about Mr Moo". People must think I'm a cunt. Which I am.

wrong.

it's not difficult to find out people's real names, if they've chosen to fill in the real name field.

i don't like using people's usernames because personally i find it embarrassing and childish to keep calling someone "cyberluvr69", or whatever if i know their real name. we're all actual human beings here. to me, your username is just unique a way of distinguishing you from someone else. magicman versus majikman, lou_lou versus luu_luu.

i don't consider it impolite to use someone's real name on the board, and i don't see why i should have to ask permission first. in fact, i think it's quite unsociable to keep calling someone by their username once you know them, it's as if you want to keep them at arm's distance or something.

CTW is unlike other communities. we are all mates here (or meant to be) and should [hopefully] knit as a real-life group of people, not just characters on a screen. i can't really understand why people would want to insist on keeping that barrier there.

Because this is a public forum, and there will be people here that you do want to keep a barrier between. There have been arseshole on this site before, and no doubt there will be again (and no doubt some people even think I am an arsehole shrug.gif)

I am just protective of my privacy, and I think it is a sign of respect that you find out if your friends are happy with you using their real name before you do it.

And there is also the fact that I don't know may of the people's real names, so when someone posts

"Nice One Bill", I don't have a clue who they are talking about.

D'uh, when someone posts a comment like that in a thread you are reading, posting in, it would be nice to know what they are refering too. If they said "Nice One Jay", it would be obvious they were refering to an earlier post you had made, but if they don't use the user name, or the "quote" button, unless you know the person, you don't have a clue. Thereby making CTW cliquey!!

Oh I agree, CTW isn't clique, but when people use real names instead of usernames, it does exclude people. (IMHO)

Anyway, my simple point, a long time ago, was that...shrug.gif lost in the mists of time. lol
