CTW IMO is far from CLIQUEY!!

Oh I agree, CTW isn't clique, but when people use real names instead of usernames, it does exclude people. (IMHO)

Blink I do not understand how, by using peoples real names on the board makes it cliquey?? confused.gif

IMO it shows that we are all slowly but surely getting to know each other on a personal level & is that not a better thing??

I think it is a sign of respect that you find out if your friends are happy with you using their real name before you do it

maybe we just find out the ones who are over-sensitive and paranoid about using their real names and everyone else carry on as normal. shrug.gif

Because this is a public forum, and there will be people here that you do want to keep a barrier between. There have been arseshole on this site before, and no doubt there will be again (and no doubt some people even think I am an arsehole shrug.gif)

I am just protective of my privacy, and I think it is a sign of respect that you find out if your friends are happy with you using their real name before you do it.

Blink, this may seem kind of dumb, but why the dislike of people using your name...yet no problem having a photo of yourself next to every post? I've only just put an avatar up after 11 months...admittedly, the last 6 have been due to incompetence with puters and laziness, but the first few I was more concerned about people spotting my ugly mug next to posts concerning 'clubbing culture'

Sorry, should I be suprised by your use of the word hence? Oh that is right, you have issues with me, for some unkonwn reason, hence your need for making little comments like that. I would love to know exactly what your problem is with me, no doubt you will chose to inform me at some point

Good question *shrugs* who can say....maybe it is because who I was before I became Blink isn't someone I won't to know anymore, but unfortunately, when people really get to know me, it is going to be hard for them not to find out my "real world" name (ie what people I work with call me).

Having my photo up, however, is me, and it isn't that I have a problem people getting to know me, I just want them to get to know me as who I was.

Hell, maybe I am just immensely paranoid and weird!!!

Because there will be plenty of people on here who do not know people's real names, so as soon as you refer to someone by their real name, you excluded people.

Obviously I am the only one who feels this way shrug.gif

should we restrict how personal we are with people we know (ie. I know Miss Diddy a.k.a. Lisa) on the board, just for the benifit of others. If we have built up a friendship with someone why would we then act like strangers. I understand the concept of a pseudonym in cases like this (web forum) but this especially isn't any regular forum is it because we actually meet and know each other (some of us) on a personal level.

I agree that putting your name on the web can be risky and isn't always advisable, but with regards to using real names i/o usernames when u know the person is big fat hairy bollocks. If thats excluding people then i apologise but im not gonna change.

Blink I really dont understand how it is excluding anyone, if I was to know your real name & I knew you on a personal level I would probably use your name on occasion too..

There are peeps on the board who I have not yet met, but thru peeps using their real names, I have got to know them by these names, it is not really hard now is it!! thumbs.gif

Of course it's excluding people. As soon as you start saying, "Yes George, I agree", you're excluding everybody who doesn't know who George is from the conversation. So I take Blink's point.

But I also agree with Jay, I'm not going to start calling Kev CreamyC all the time just for the benefit of others. And most of the people I know I call by their usernames in person anyway. And not many people know my real name.

So, in conclusion shrug.gif

P.S. If you think the site isn't cliquey, you don't get out much. eviltongue.gif

I agree that in person it is totally different, and I can understand why people think it is more friendly/sociable to use people's real names, even on a forum, but it still brings me back to the first point.

As FTB says

(And no, I don't think CTW is cliquey, I would have [censored] off a long time ago if I did)

  • CTW Promotors

well you could say the same then FTB, if i was to post a reply up & use creamyc rather than Kev!! what difference is there.....Creamyc/kev either one used in your opinion will be excluding everyone then???

by the way i just had an inspired thought about this thread and the way i see it. i sometimes continue to use people's usernames if they are either:

a. short and snappy

b. *could* be something close to a real name

like say for example miss_diddy, i know she's called Lisa and would probably rather refer to her as Lisa because miss_diddy is a bit of a mouthful and sounds a bit silly when you're trying to have a conversation (no offence, by the way!). same thing applies with "CreamyC", i'm not going to write the word Creamy when the person i want to refer to is called Kev.

but say with your username, Blink, it's short and snappy and to be honest i'd probably carry on using that even if i knew your proper name.

i do find it weird how certain people in conversations on here address me personally as TomD instead of just, er... Tom. why bother with the D?

*shrugs*
