Why do football supporters always say things like "We beat you yesterday" and "We're doing really bad/good this season" when they arent even IN the team?

 

Why do so many heated arguments (sometimes ending up in real fights) start just because someone doesnt like another persons choice of team, views on a player, agree/disagree with a referees decision?
