It actually depends on how you look at the sum.

 

OK...5.25 is the right answer if you do it on a standard cheapo nasty LTR calculator(left to right)...

BUT...if you do it as it should be done with a scientific BoDMAS (Brackets, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract)calculator then the answer is 6.5...

 

5+2x3/4

= 5 + (2 x 3/4)

= 5 + (2 x 0.75)

= 5 + 1.5

= 6.5

 

This theory can't be right though surely..
