I agree with Mr Happy on this one.

 

He didn't say that you have to have experience to listen to a given style of music.

However I do agree that you have to have experience & appreciation to write it.

 

Otherwise you invariably end up imitating all the obvious features (e.g. the minimal / looped sound) without paying attention to the subtleties. It does not follow that you can loop any old [censored], stick a hard house bassline on it and call it "techy hard house"!
