sort of trademark trance sounds van dyk uses, is very similar to some psy trance sounds. like, for example, imagine a constant chord in the background. now make that chord 'flash' on and off in time with the beat (like 8 times a second or something).

 

psy trance has constant sounds 'flashing' like that, and it goes a long way to creating the 'bitty' sound effect.

Sort-of see what you mean, but not sure you can attribute that sound to psytrance originally...?

 

You can recreate that sort of effect with even the most basic synth - just a LFO linked to a filter, synchronised with the beat.

a gated pad... um..most trance tracks use these sounds..
