try Queen's head or The Queen's head.

Tried both of those. Neither work. Think I'll just [censored] it off all together.

Finally got it. queen's head worked this time. I must have forgotten to put the apostrophy in...even though it's not supposed to be there.

Yeah it is. Queen's head. The apostrophe would only NOT be there if it was plural, which it isn't. smile.gif

No, it shouldnt be there. The apostrophe basically is used for abbreviation...to remove a letter or 2

it is big = it's big

no you are not = no you aren't

Spain is a hot place = Spain's a hot place

the sky is blue = the sky's blue

The Queen is an ugly cow = The Queen's an ugly cow

etc

etc

etc

Queen's head = Queen is head....doesnt make sense. Therefore it should be The QUEENS head...NO apostrophe. nerner.gif

i think you're wrong.

This is Lisa's box of chocolates.

This is Lisa's car.

This is Lisa's head.

This is the Queen's head.

From the chambers concise dictionary...

An apostrophe is used to form possessive nouns; it is placed before the s with singular nouns and with plural nouns not ending in -s, and after the s with plural nouns ending in -s;

Anne's desk

the women's coats

the residents' car park

Thank feck for that, i actually doubted myself for a moment then! shocked.gif lol

  • CTW Members

None of those need apostrophes either.

Plurals don't need apostrophes. 1 cat...2 cats. Its NOT 2 cat's.

The Queens head is correct

The Queen's dead is correct. (even though she's not)

In that case then, why does it say nouns and not NOUN'S???

APOSTROPHE

a·pos·tro·phe1 ( P )

The superscript sign ( ' ) used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a word, the possessive case, or the plurals of numbers, letters, and abbreviations.

The direct address of an absent or imaginary person or of a personified abstraction, especially as a digression in the course of a speech or composition.

The contraction of a word by the omission of a letter or letters, which omission is marked by the character ['] placed where the letter or letters would have been; as, call'd for called.

The mark ['] used to denote that a word is contracted (as in ne'er for never, can't for can not), and as a sign of the possessive, singular and plural; as, a boy's hat, boys' hats. In the latter use it originally marked the omission of the letter e.

Oh god i think we're fighting the same corner here.

Yes, an apostrophe IS used (like you say) when part of a word is missing, and no, it's not used (like you say) to form a plural...

BUT

it is used to make a POSSESSIVE noun (not a plural noun).

You're right about the plural bit (i completely agree)

but i'm right about the possessive bit, honest. smile.gif

Queen's head is not plural and there isn't part of a word missing, but it IS possessive which is why you use the apostrophe.
