most dance tunes are 4-4 beat (some ppl will know what i mean)

they go

d d d d DUH d d d , d d d d DUH d d d

some tunes are 6-8

they go

d d d DUH d d, d d d DUH d d

i reckon 6-8 tunes are interesting, and i like em in a set.

y aren't more 6-8 tunes produced?

Cos it has a totally different kind of vibe really!

Lots of (most?) jazz is in 6/8 I think. So you could say, why don't they make more 4/4 jazz music? Erm, I suppose it wouldn't sound as jazzy any more!

Personal opinion: it's quite hard to give house music the same "drive" with a compound time signature.

P.S. I've definitely heard a handful of 6/8 house tunes, but not any outrageosly good ones!

I don't think trance and 6/8 time get on very well (because 6/8 has a "funkier" rather than "driving" sound).

More unusual time signatures:

Jakatta "American Dream" could be classed as 3/2 time (with the kicks as crotchets).

Goldie "Temper Temper" is in [censored] 7/8 time! (Plus there are some 7/4 and 4/4 bits as well.)

aye. understand what ya mean about the 'feel' of the music.

for hard [trance dance house] it would kinda ruin the feel of the flow.

i know i keep going on about it but this 040 - dreams remix in his *points down* set is a very nice, light, rolling, happy kinda tune. and it's 6-8 - probly says it all really.

if anyones desperately interested in this mystery tune i could get it as a single and send it... i absolutely fcukin love it spliff.gif makes me close my eyes and open my mouth. (shut up)

get producing then ppl smile.gif

Aye, the exception proves the rule, or something!

Similarly, there's an unspoken "rule" that dance music should be in the minor key, but there are a handful of tracks that are in the major key without sounding horribly cheesy.

yeah exactly there's an official term for this (i did GCSE music) it's called plagal or something like that.

music is in a minor, but a 'happy' minor key, not a REALLY minor key.

Actually a lot of trance/techno etc could be better described using modes. E.g. aolian/dorian modes are quite common.

Why? Such a pointless subject unless you actually want to become a musician or work in the music industry.

Actually business studies would probably be more useful to work in the music industry!

It is definitely useful (though not essential) for any wannabe composer/performer though.

Why did I study music?

* Because it's interesting.

* Because it's a perfectly acceptable A-level.

* Because I'm good at it.

* And because most other subjects seemed boring to me!

Besides, it got me into university! smile.gif

To be it's either 4 beat or breakbeat.

Breakbeat is still in 4/4 time (well most of it).

Just because something is in 4/4 time, doesn't mean it has a strong emphasis on every beat (as in house). You can still count "1,2,3,4" to most breakbeat, and each of those beats can be equally divided into 2 parts, etc.

P.S. I don't regret doing philosophy either! smile.gif

(Another "pointless", but interesting, subject.)

Knowledge is power. You can never know too much stuff. Plus the world would be a dull place if everybody just studied "useful" stuff and did "useful" things.
