an acetate is a limited use vinyl.... its what everyone used to use before cd decks were used....

Yep acetate is the actual name for the special vinyl used for limited play.

Yep, DJs used it for playin their own material that might never get released etc.

And some record labels used it as a promotional tool. DJs would play it but then have to buy it again becos the quality of the vinyl gets pants after "so" many plays

Well before cd decks were comman place, DJs had no choice. If they wanted to "roadtest" a track of theirs they would have to press up an acetate.

 

1. Becos it was the only kind of vinyl possible, due to the fact normal vinyls can be pressed up in small amounts (normal run is of 500 and no less) So that would be too expensive

 

2. As ive said CD decks werent really in use so burning it onto cd wouldnt of been any good.
