anyone else also remember the small matter of a global recession round about that time too? john major winning the election was the worst thing that oculd ahve ahppened to the tories.

If maggie had stayed in, tories would have lost, leaving them to pick a decent leader and rebuild the party whilst tony blair would have either never become party leasder or become PM over one of the worst economic crshes in recent history, ready for th tories to be elected right back in again and no one wold touch labour with a 10 foot abrge pole again.

it was an amazing stroke of luck that labour being re-elected to power coincieded with a huge economic upturn! and yet things haven't really improved even with the huge majority and extra cash they had other than the decrease in unemployment which would have most likely happened no matter who was in power

Poor Tories having to deal with a global recession which lasted from 1979 until 1997.
