Free 24-hour travel on New Year's Eve in London

Andrew Clark, transport correspondent

Wednesday October 15, 2003

The Guardian

London's tubes, buses and trains will operate a free 24-hour service on New Year's Eve, the mayor, Ken Livingstone, said yesterday, following complaints that the capital was a fun-free zone last year.

Tubes will run all night for the first time since the Queen's golden jubilee celebrations last year, with 400,000 people expected in the city centre. There will be extra night buses and many national rail services will continue until 5am.

Mr Livingstone said that, in previous years, LU had insisted that 20 stations would have to close in central London for safety reasons if new year celebrations there were sanctioned.

However, the tubes passed into his control earlier this year: "Now they will just stay open like in any other sensible city around the world."

How [censored] good is that?! It couldn't be more convenient, makes a bloody change as transport in London is usually pants! yay.gif
