i reckon ppl use the word cliquey, when like james said a group off friends. but that group wont let anyone else in, and sometimes take the piss or get at other ppl . also one rule for them, another rule for other ppl

aha, and this is the difference - i dont believe we as a group/message board LOCK people out - we ACTIVELY encourage new people to join/meet - in fact there STILL really arent enough people who come out with us - max of 5 on weekenders ! the intention was to have like 50+

Nothing at all wrong with being cliquey, why spread yourself too thinly and hang around with people you have an ok time with when you can be close to a few?

indeed - a VERY good point Kether - I personally think people use the word 'cliquey' incorrectly on here (and other sites), and far too often.

 

Surely to have good friends means there is a finite number of them. If you had 100 best friends none of them would be 'best' because you would harly get to speak to any one of them regularly enough to be classed as a best friend

I see the word 'cliquey' as a bit of a joke really!

The best actual example I can think of as a clique is from the film 'Heathers'...

 

 

James here is a longer definition from my work OED.

 

1. a. A small and exclusive party or set, a narrow coterie

or circle: a term of reproach or contempt, applied generally

to such as are considered to associate for unworthy or selfish

ends, or to small and select bodies who arrogate supreme authority

in matters of social status, literature, etc.

 

The second part is the most relevant- a 'clique' tends to be CLOSED i.e. once it's formed almost no-one can get in and furthermore those who are outside it are generally sneered at.

 

Being a relative virgin to the world of clubtheworld.uk I can categorically say that you/we are NOT A CLIQUE-

 

a club, yes...

a group, yes

 

but not a clique...

 

as James says you welcome all and sundry (including my good self).

 

Any group of people who know each other to some extent appears a clique at first, but such is life...

 

P.S I am up for a weekender and could persuade some others if given enough notice (I'm away quite a bit for work and pleasure)...
