KORG announce the KORG miniKORG 700Sm, a mini version of the classic “mini” but with all the spec. The KORG miniKORG 700s holds a very dear place in my heart. It was the first proper synthesizer I actually spent time with. I’d recently changed high school and I immediately visited the music department to check out their drum kit, being the drummer that I am. KORG KRONOS returns, a collective sigh of relief is emitted from its fanbase and we have another killer workstation to enjoy! It’s Been a Long Wait For some time now, KORG KRONOS fans have been crying out for a new version of the flagship workstation. Every time KORG made an announcement in recent years, it was pre-empted by a sharp intake of breath, followed shortly after by a loud groan as the third iteration of the KRONOS failed to appear yet again. Not this time, though. It’s huge, it’s here, and it’s coming to a music store near you very soon! KORG can easily lay claim to being the originators of the keyboard workstation, way back with the legendary M1. Since then, they’ve remained pretty much top of the game in that field, with Yamaha and Roland stealing a march in recent years... The KORG nanoKEY Fold takes portable keyboard technology to the extreme with a fold-up control surface that slips right inside your jacket pocket for when inspiration strikes on the move! Making music on the move has become increasingly easier over the years and many companies have sought to give us the right tools with which to do it. But replicating the western chromatic piano-style keyboard in miniature has often eluded us... The mid-‘80s saw the release of the Korg DW-8000, a unique digital/analog hybrid that sounds like nothing else on the planet. This is its story. Korg DW-8000 For every Roland Juno-106 and Prophet-5, there are plenty of mid-tier synths that never broke through into the big time. Not for lack of features or sound quality either; with so many excellent instruments released between the late-‘70s and early ‘90s, not every synth could be a runaway hit... Inspired by Arturia’s MiniBrute V and the original’s lack of presets, I decided to pick some great patch sheets to encourage your hands-on sound design. When I was reviewing Arturia’s latest software synthesizer, the MiniBrute V, it reminded me of the days when synths had no preset memories and the only way to share sounds was to create patch sheets. These sheets were the patch memories of old. We used to hand draw them, synth outlines and all. Even if you’re copying someone else’s patch sheet, it is a very rewarding experience to create a sound from scratch. In doing so, you learn how each parameter shapes a sound. You begin to understand how that particular synthesizer works. So I have gathered up some patch sheets from various places. Each can be used on the original hardware or software versions. Resist the temptation to flick through factory presets and get to know your instrument by using your hands, eyes and ears. Happy patching! ...
