Remove Voting ?

I'm just wondering whether we should just disable voting / displaying votes - its all pretty pointless anyway as I dont agree that 10 votes of 5 and 1 vote of 1 makes 4 stars!!?

 

Anyway, we all know who the cool people are !

Yeah i say remove it, if your gonna get people that abuse the system like we clearly have, then it should be taken away, again, its one of those thing where a few or an individual [censored] it up for everyone else .

 

Instead, what about moderators and only moderators giving nicknames of any taste to any member they feel appropriate ?

i guess the problem is that the system only has 5 stars available for display and the smallest unit available is a whole star. so, it all comes down to how the system rounds the numbers.

 

it's probably easiest (and in someways makes the most sense) to round to the whole-number part of the score. however, that would mean that 4.1 and 4.9 both get scored as 4. the flip-side is that 4.6 would get scored as 5 when it's clearly no longer perfect.

 

i suspect this is one of these things where there really is no "right" answer.

 

i guess the more relevant question is what's the point of the rating system anyway?

 

different people will inevitably use different criteria so somebody might have a 3.5 score because a bunch of people disagreed with their musical preferences even though they're a great person in other respects.

 

have you seen www.hotornot.com? i think there's a (admittedly weak) parallel there but 5 minutes spent on that site convinces me that the ratings are useless (although it's a lot better than it used to be). these things are so subjective.

 

also, reading the board recently, i suppose it's natural for people to get upset if their rating goes down but that's all part of having a rating system isn't it? it's surely a natural extension of your messages about speaking one's mind which everybody seems to agree with?

 

anyway, for all these reasons, i think it might be worth considering dropping the feature.

 

interested to hear if anybody is particularly keen to retain it?
