Train Crash @Potters Bar, Hertfordshire

Nasty business...

James

Yes, this was quite shocking. Tracey, my secretary, saw it happen. The

train, which apparently was not going all that fast, travelling north, first

hit the side of the bridge over Darkes Lane so that debris fell onto the

road below and then hit the platform. Part of the train hit a waiting room

on the platform with people inside - they are among the (unconfirmed)

fatalities - and part of the train went down the enbankment and into the car

park.

Since about 1pm, when it happened, there have been constant emergency

vehicles including air ambulance helicopters. Darkes Lane was impassable

because of the emergency services and the inevitable onlookers. Frankly I

did not feel like having a closer look.

No doubt details will emerge from the news this evening. I would guess that

the whole line is closed. If the bridge was hit they will surely not send

trains over it until it is properly checked out. But who knows what

decisions will be taken by the "experts" in charge of our railways.
