CTW DJs Chris-Hutchinson Posted April 3, 2004 CTW DJs Share Posted April 3, 2004 ....a well worked vocal?? Just listening to 'Fell From The Stars' by Dougal + Gammar, not a great track by any means, but the vocal works soooooo well with it that it sounds a hell of a lot better then if it wasnt there
CTW Members nuthead53 Posted April 3, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 3, 2004 i love vocals in tracks, they can be really chilling, or they can give you that tingling fealing, or they can just brake a repative sound. but they can also be over done, so in general vocals are very good, as long as there used correctly
CTW Members Mr Happy Posted April 3, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 3, 2004 its very rare that i like vocals usually hate them unless its a really well worked vocal and is the emphasis of the track (ie theres little else to it so the focal point is the vocals) Quote Mr Happy's fishy fish MangaFish munch munch MSN & e-mail - mangafish@mangafish.net AOL - MangaMorgan Online mixes - http://www.mangafish.net/mixes/
CTW Members Phil rr Posted April 3, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 3, 2004 (edited) have 2 agree with Happy....sparse vocals r ok...but i don't like someone singing in tracks generally.... Matt Darey - beautiful - i do like...but not many others. 4 strings - into the night - prefer the instrumental armin - communication - one word vocals Edited April 3, 2004 by Phil rr

CTW Members Ginge Posted April 4, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 4, 2004 Not really keen on vocals, I go to clubs to listen to choons...not some idiot warbling over a banging baseline and generally singing off key. Keep the vocals for cheesey pop bollox.

CTW DJs Ian Cashman Posted April 4, 2004 CTW DJs Share Posted April 4, 2004 depends if the track is written around the vocal, or the vocal is jut bolted on for commercial reasons... As a trance DJ i love good vocal tunes. But addmittedly there are a lot of shit ones out there. I wont play anything i think is remotley shit. CTW DJs Ian Cashman Posted April 4, 2004 CTW DJs Share Posted April 4, 2004 (edited) examples... JX 'Restless' (i think this is a perfect example of a dire vocal... the lyrics are awful and she has an awful voice) Motorcycle 'As The Rush Comes' (a faultless vocal track... the lyrics are not cheese and she has a beautiful voice) Edited April 4, 2004 by Ian Cashman
CTW DJs Chris-Hutchinson Posted April 4, 2004 Author CTW DJs Share Posted April 4, 2004 QUOTE (Ian Cashman @ Apr 4 2004, 12:49) examples... JX 'Restless' (i think this is a perfect example of a dire vocal... the lyrics are awful and she has an awful voice) Motorcycle 'As The Rush Comes' (a faultless vocal track... the lyrics are not cheese and she has a beautiful voice) Im talking about well-used vocals only, you only gotta sift thru a few hardcore tunes to see that good vocals are few and far between (and the best ones are usually nicked from trance/house tunes anyway lol).... Even so, still reckon that when used properly, a vocal can add so much more to a track
CTW Members LiquidEyes Posted April 4, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 4, 2004 (1) Love em or (2) Dont mind as long as it sounds good Why would anyone choose (1) over (2)? Surely nobody likes shit vocals? Obviously, I like vocals as long as they sound good. IMHO, usually they don't. There are not many people in the world who are good at writing "songs" (in the traditional sense) AND good at writing dance music. I agree with Ian: you can tell when the vocal has been "tacked on" as an afterthought. Judge Jules (though quite capable of being a good DJ) epitomises this terrible trend, with his habit of playing the worst possible bootlegs. I also like quite "dubby" use of vocals, but in a way this is just using the voice samples as texture and/or as a percussion instrument. It's not quite the same as having a "sung" melody. I am becoming increasingly conscious of how easy it is for perfectly good music to be completely forgettable to the majority of clubbers. Even some of my all-time favourite tunes are difficult to remember unless you hear them a few times. As a wannabe producer, it is a dilemma that, unless you have a catchy hook -- be it an in-your-face melody, and/or memorable vocals, and/or (in relatively few cases) some unique sound that has never been done before -- the chances of having much commercial success are minimal. It may be a good tune but it will disappear into a sea of good tunes. I certainly wouldn't advocate tacking on a shit vocal for the sake of achieving commercial success, but in a way, I would have to say a good tune with a good hook (i.e. one that does not make the tune any worse), is better than the same tune with no hook. CTW Members Phil rr Posted April 4, 2004 CTW Members Share Posted April 4, 2004 (edited) one thing i REALLY fukkin hate (and what turned me off HH a bit a year ago) is HH tunes which have entire chunks of film script in them, like Man on the Moon - although the tune to that is ok.
