CTW DJs LiamStyles Posted April 11, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted April 11, 2003 Fruity loops is a good start for your sequencing. Until you get a better knowledge of music production. Have you got a decent soundcard? If so, get a midi controller keyboard, a couple of softsynths. That should take care of your sounds. If you have the dollar buy a sampler. If you dont i can send you a copy of a software sampler called kontakt (native instruments) If you have all this, your on your way, the rest is just practise. Your a dj so you'll know song structures etc. Just have a play round and you'll develope your own style. CTW Members Ed_worx Posted April 11, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted April 11, 2003 ok ive just got kontakt, now how do i use it within fruity loops or does it run as a seperate program? Thanks For Your Help!!
CTW DJs LiamStyles Posted April 11, 2003 CTW DJs Share Posted April 11, 2003 Its just a sampler. Wont really be much use unless you have a midi keyboard. You can put samples you arlready have thru it and effect them etc for now. But i would advise you to get a midi keyboard. Cos you wont be able to write riffs etc without one. I dont use fruityloops myself so dont know that much about it. Is a hard subject to explain on here really mate, there hell of alot to explain. I would get a few books and try and read asmuch as you can. Or if you can get a copy of reason, theres [censored] loads of posts about it on this site, with full tutorials etc. Plus reason is self contained. Have a look see wot you think. CTW Members Simon_C1562626685 Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 With the release of FL Studio fruityloops is well up there with Cubase etc. As for a midi keyboard u don't need one to write riffs etc, as for samplers, fruity has one built in. Kontakt is a lot better tho. If u need any help with fruity itself i know my way around it pretty well and i'm always happy to help out. So feel free to ask Quote you need me i'm magic E, hehe
CTW Members Blink Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 Si, you may not need a keyboard to write riffs, but some of us prefer the "hands on"/"organic" approach. i find it hard to write riffs without a keyboard, cos I am inspired by sounds and I like to [censored] about and see what they do, as opposed to thinking of a riff then trying to get it down. You can't [censored] about the same way with a mouse the way you can with a keyboard. But then again, I know a few people who write amazing riffs without touching a keyboard
CTW Members Simon_C1562626685 Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 like me for instance, lol. Nah, i do have a midi keyboard, and i do like to play around with it. But i mainly use it for audiotioning sounds. But the point i weas making is that u don'e NEED one to make tunes Quote you need me i'm magic E, hehe
CTW Members Blink Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 I know what you mean....I like your phrase "auditioning sounds" That is what I do, and then I get a riff close, and then I refine my crap playing skills using the computer, but I have to audition the sound! CTW Members Simon_C1562626685 Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 yeah, that pretty much all i've used my keyboard for, when i get a riff in my head generally now i can get it into the computer no trouble. And as i can't play the keyboard all that well using the mouse is easier. Altho riffs arent' whats pissing me off now, it's the fuckin builds, lol Quote you need me i'm magic E, hehe

CTW Members Simon_C1562626685 Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 the build up in a tune, b4 it goes into the main breakdown Quote you need me i'm magic E, hehe
CTW Members Mr Happy Posted April 12, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 12, 2003 ah yes - i know what u meen can be tricky as if u build up too much the breakdown sounds like an anticlimax and if u dont build up enuf then the breakdown comes from nowhere my answer to this dilema is to introduce a techy feel to it - keep it flowing - but i'm biased Quote Mr Happy's fishy fish MangaFish munch munch MSN & e-mail - mangafish@mangafish.net AOL - MangaMorgan Online mixes - http://www.mangafish.net/mixes/
CTW Members Blink Posted April 13, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 13, 2003 Well I just installed Fruity 3.1.1.1.1.1.1. (however many .1's its got) and had a quick nosey, the user interface doesn't look very intuitive, the firdt thingI asked was "Where's the piano roll" Found that, had a bit of a mess about, then discovered the On-the-fly timestretch feature....I then spent the next 10 minutes with just a 16th hi-hat pattern, at 180bpm, pissing about doing short stretches on bits, it made some EVIL noises. Not sure if I will use the whole programme tho, have to have more of a look at it later. Reason vs Fruity, who prefers which?
CTW Members Simon_C1562626685 Posted April 13, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted April 13, 2003 personally i don't like reason as it's a lot harder to expand than fruity as it doesn't support VST or DX plugins(or any plug ins for that matter). It is possible to use it with Cubase and rewire but it all seems a bit too much hastle to me. As for fruity, the earlier versions weren't the best ever, but with FL Studio they have overcome most of the problems, plus they've now included a wave editor (which admitedly is pretty lame but save us opening up soundforge just to add loop points or normalise a sample etc.) Another good adition which i havent' really used properly yet is the audio recording tools. And imo the best bits about the nmew version are the complete overhall of FX channels (u now get 64 instead of 16) And also the new playlist in it is a godsend. Right so i think you've gathered now i prefer fruity, lol. But i will say that i havent' used reason extensively so can't give a proper judgement of it Quote you need me i'm magic E, hehe
