Sentencing due over internet baby sale

A woman who admitted selling her unborn baby over the internet to two different couples is due to be sentenced.

Moira Greenslade, 33, from Keighley, West Yorkshire, made £2,500 after she offered to give up her child to two couples she contacted through a surrogacy website.

She also admitted signing an agreement with a third couple after placing an advert on the website offering to give the same baby up for adoption.

Greenslade pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining money by deception and three offences under the Adoption Act at a hearing at Bingley Magistrates Court earlier this year.

The court heard how she made a £9,000 surrogacy agreement and received a total of £1,500 from Scottish couple Mark and Michelle Johnson in February last year.

She then obtained a further £1,000 from Peter and Sharon Robinson-Hudson, from Wrexham, north Wales, in a similar agreement, worth £5,000, made when she was already pregnant in August.

But she cancelled both agreements shortly before the baby was born, leading the Robinson-Hudsons to contact Wrexham police to make a complaint of deception.

Greenslade was arrested on suspicion of obtaining money by deception at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton on December 11, 2003, shortly after she gave birth to a baby girl, who was subsequently taken into care.

Present at the hospital was the third couple, Janet and Andrew Rashley from Southampton, who signed a surrogacy agreement with Greenslade after she placed an advert on the Surromomsonline website in August offering her baby for adoption.

She is appearing at Leeds Crown Court for sentencing

Presumably this is because she deceived the buyers that the child would grow up to be beautiful.
