If the person involved is of sound mind and judgement, determined by some kind of pschyiatric (is that right?) examination, then the patient signing a consent form with witnesses, is one way of getting round that issue.

I imagine a not-atypical euthanasia type scenario would be one where a guy has had a car-crash (or whatever) and is paralysed and wouldn't be able to write...?

Good point andy, so who signs the consent forms for someone like that when an operation is needed? next of kin?
