Yeah thats another way i guess. smile.gif

I record straight onto Minidisc these days and just plug that back into the PC.

My amp has got a seperate recording output for MDs so i can crank it up nice and loud, but the signal going into the MD is at a preset level

, so it all works out quite nicely

don'y know whether this is a good solution or not, but turning down the mic level really, really low seems to work. Not distorted and not too low down in the mix...

aaron I'd love to try what you suggest, but got lost when you said something about 'system tray'- I need IT advice in language for stupid people I'm afraid...

... sadly the recording didn't improve my mixing- but at least it focuses the mind!

Ahhh! Ok!.. The system tray is what is on the bottom right hand corner of the screen... where the clock is... With a bit of luck there will be a speaker icon near there, which you can double click (If you hover the mouse over ity it should say 'Volume'

oh ok cool! smile.gif

Yeah you can access it from the 'Sounds and Audio devices' in control panel, click on the bit that says plays volume icon in task bar and it should do the job

Do I just have to record really low on the trim?

You shouldn't have to adjust the levels on your mixer. The "line out" / "rec" output should churn out sound at a standard "line" level. So "9 out of 10 bars" on your mixer (or however many there are) should be transmitting an optimal, non-distorted signal.

Just make sure the levels on Volume Control are adjusted accordingly. Turn your "line in" down until the sound is not distorting at all ... then take it down a couple of extra notches just to give yourself some "headroom" (in case there are some sudden jumps in the volume during your mix).

Try recording a snippet of a tune (at a loud point) and look at the waveform to make sure it's comfortably within the limits. Play it back to make sure it sounds okay. It will sound horrendous if it clips digitally (i.e. the sound goes off the top of the scale) - you'll hear a nasty snapping sound that can hurt your speakers.

Hope this helps mate.

cheers andy and aaron... have followed al your tips- main thing that works is having the microphone volume on the pc down really, really low...

sadly my mixing is shite- I'm clearly too lazy to get them right on the button- need to get them much closer before bringing the new track in.

In fact just need to treat it like making loving to a beautiful woman...

take my time to match her speed, take it nice and slowly and spend a lot of time twiddling her dials before when I'm ready firing in in like Flynn...

Personally, I prefer to just whack my 12" straight on there.
