basically no as ur ruiter will be the computer with the IP number attached

basically this meens that if sum1 on the internet trys to look @ u, all they will c if ur ruiter as ur other computers are 'hidden' being the ruiter

i would read the manual of the ruiter to c if there is ne way of setting up a (i think this is the correct termonolagy) 'gateway' to the file server with ur mixes on

failing that ur welcome to upload sum onto my webserver

o, what i ment to say to the less computer literate was:

an IP number is a unique identification number that consisters of a number between 0 and 255, seperated by a dot then the numbers again etc so it will look like this: "123.123.123.123"

basically no 1 else on the internet will have a same ip number as u so if sum1 on the internet gives u thier ip number u can 'view' thier computer directly

1)

msn is diff as its already connected and routing - plus it was u who establised the connection not the person sending the file to u (ie u established the connection buy signing into msn)

to set up ur computer to stream files or have files to downlaod from a ftp/http server u will require the user to connect to UR computer and thats not possible as this cant connect directly to ur computers IP number as its behine a diff IP number (the router)

it is possible to get the router to allow ppl on the internet to connect to ur computer, but this is alot more difficalt and will be specific to ur router, so i cant be ne more help unless i was sitting @ ur desk now

2)

i will set u up an ftp address. soonish

in short YES!!

It's really simple. Access the SMC control interface. To access this you usually just enter the routers IP addy into your browsers URL.

Then enter the password to access the control panel. You now want to set your virtual server. So depending on what version of the router firmware you are using (i'm using R1.95n). From there you'll notice a table with the IP's starting 195.168.x. (where the x is there will be another 3 digit number, this might be diff to mine as this is down to your DHCP side to the router). You'll have another box where you can enter some numbers. These numbers will be the last 3 digits of your machines IP that you want to set up as the server. (If you're not to sure how to find that out just message me).

Ok now we just set the port that we want to use, in this instance it will most probably be port 80 as this is the HTTP port.

You'll now need to reboot your router. To do this just click on ToolBox. Then reboot it. Ok this has now allowed incoming traffic to the server.

Now you'll need your external IP address which is given to you by NTL. In short your modems IP addy. You can find this out at http://checkip.dyndns.org/

Now this will let people access your server. HOWEVER my question is have you actaully set the server up? Like what kinda server are you running IIS, LINUX, UNIX or Apache? I'm using Apache as i love it and it's free. Hate IIS as it's M$ and well they annoy me.

If you want anymore assistance just drop us a bell, but for the next two weeks i'm gonna be rushed off my feet cry.gifcry.gif
