My teenage daughter has been kidnapped, and the people I work with may be involved in both.

I'm Federal Agent Jack Bauer and this is the longest day of my life...

I got 73%.

Did anyone else notice that in the answers it said "Alcohol is estimated to play a part in more than 30,000 deaths per year."

For fucks sake, when you compare this to the amount of drug related deaths it just doesn't make sense?! confused.gif Why is alcohol legal when it kills far more people than any illegal drugs?!

Less people take drugs than people who drink, so the statistics show that only a small percentage of drinkers die due to drink. Where as drug users are in far smaller numbers than drinkers and the deaths from overdoses are statistically higher than those of alcohol related deaths, leading to the view that drug use is far more dangerous than drink.

i still thought the statisctics for drug related deaths were lower than alcohol though? may be wrong but i remember a paramedic sayin to me once that given the choice he would choose drugs over alcohol (providng taken safely) because they are getting safer1

well he was comparing pills to a "bad batch" that he said was going around a couple of years ago when the most of them were found not to have MDMA in them and he said thats when the most problems arise when it was a load of other shite mixed in!

Even then, when you consider that 81 people died in 3 yrs from taking E (so thats appx. 20 per year) thats nothing compared to 30,000. And I can see what you mean by more people drinking, but still, 20 compared to 30,000 seems a huge difference even when putting this into consideration.

Actual alcohol specific deaths are roughly 3,600 a year (alcohol specific deaths).

The number of deaths where alcohol is a significant contributory cause, rather than sole cause, has been estimated to be 25,000 to 40,000 per year.

Drug overdoses (from ecstacy, amphetamines, etc) are roughly 2,900 a year.

I can't find any figures on deaths where drugs where a contributary factor, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't occur.

The problem occurs when you look at the numbers of deaths by alcohol or drugs and then compare it with the known number of users. Its estimated that 89% of the population drink alcohol compared with 8.6% of the population (that admitted to) using illicit drugs. UK population being 58.8 million (taken from the population from census return in 2001). It does leave the impression that you are more likely to die from a drugs over dose than drink.

Jeez I've possibly found a way of making this fun thread boring, oops.
