CTW Members Bukey Posted June 2, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 2, 2003 I've gotta say that I'm a relative newbie to the site, and this is how I see things: 1) I did read the site for a short while before joining... And in some of the posts I did see a bit of banter... Most I could recognise right off as banter, other bits/people it took a while to work out the spirit in which they posted things. However, I realised as with any community, not everyone can get on all of the time, I stuck with it, but found out pretty quickly that almost all of it is pure banter. As a newbie, if interested in joining a site I'll give it a go for a while rather than just dismissing something for a few less positive points. 2) There is a real sense of community here - both online and IRL... This makes CTW what so many other boards and community sites are not. The banter, the fun posts, the meets, the serious topics, the freedom of speech in posts and even the occassional argument make the community. Remove just one aspect and you have a less "real" community. 3) There *has* to be a line drawn somewhere. I think that maybe the "Who do you hate" post was going a bit too far - not with those that used it as light-hearted banter which I'm sure was the intention of the thread though. More in the fact that someone *could* have actually used the thread to actually have a go at someone, in a real way - and may well be overstepping the mark. 4) Any line that is drawn should be known well by all moderators, that way it's across the board and no-one will feel that they are getting more/less favourable treatment. 5) Is there an option or add-on/mod/hack for UBB.threads that allows you to report abuse in a post to the mods/admins as a whole? I know most forum scripts generally have an option or mod. This may help the moderators keep track of posts and see what is causing disruption and what isn't. Just my views.... I'm not for curbing posts and banter, except where they overstep the line. And there's not much distance between too much moderation and too little... I know James' fear is losing people through not enough moderation, but too much will also cause people to leave. Anyway, I've babbled enough for now! CTW Members Phil rr Posted June 2, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 2, 2003 have to admit i just didn't read the 'who' post. altho i'm a newbie and don't have strings attached to diff ppl in the way lots of ppl might. if someone posted with some cutting edge real experience and wanted real answers from certain ppl that makes it diff i spose.. CTW Members fintbeast Posted June 2, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 2, 2003 Well frankly this is all so much bollocks! It is so [censored] tedious hearing the same [censored] cropping up again and again...there is no need for everybody to get on with everyone else all the time...it doesn't happen in 'REAL LIFE' - why do people expect it to happen on here? This site really needs to sort out what it wants to be: If it's a breeding ground and forum for up and coming djs and event promotion...then it needs to be more professional; If it's a forum for helping people to organise a wicked night out with like-minded people ...then there shouldn't be room for people to slag each other off in public. If you want it to be a place where people can have rational, frank, adult discussions about safety issues in recreational drug use...then such forums need to be moderated carefully and responsibly. If people want to chew the fat about their day / weekend / gripes / grievances / getting mashed etc...they should be able to do this in private (i.e. chat or pm - both available already!) or in forums that really are moderated. Why do a minority of punters have to regress to playground tactics of bitching at each other in public and trying to demonstrate how clever they are or - worse still - by hiding, in a cowardly fashion, behind the anonymous tag and taking potshots at people who are then provoked into equally stupid reactions. Those (very few of you) that know me, will be well aware that there are people on this site that I don't have particularly high opinions of. I will happily talk about this amongst friends and I won't show two faces to the people / person in question. If I can, I avoid seeing these people. This is what you do in 'REAL LIFE'. Logging on to this site is pure escapism in the same vein as watching a good film or reading a good book...if of slightly less cultural / intellectual value. You can take the site any way you want: it can be highly amusing, very irritating, dull or just plain weird. If these are all things which the site aspires to then congratulations you're doing a great job...if there are other aims and objectives behind the site then some things may need re-assessing... CTW Members Capn Jack Posted June 2, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted June 2, 2003 I like the forum as it is. I've been on many forums and I've found that quite a few are over moderated and aren't as welcoming as this forum. CTW Admin James Posted June 2, 2003 Author CTW Admin Share Posted June 2, 2003 5) Is there an option or add-on/mod/hack for UBB.threads that allows you to report abuse in a post to the mods/admins as a whole? I know most forum scripts generally have an option or mod. This may help the moderators keep track of posts and see what is causing disruption and what isn't. yes, at the bottom of each post there is an icon which will 'notify moderators' ... ... ... of course we dont want to have too many rules here but currently we have NO moderation at all and even the mods seem to be divided on issues! i'm now coming round to what a few people said a few months ago about the old classic 'if you dont like it dont read it' - its very difficult not to read the 'banter' when its in the middle of posts you are interested in - its even worse when the banter is ' is a cunt>' - i'm quite frankly BORED of hearing these remarks. Its bollocks. (not aimed at you, kev - inspired by your comment, if you will) i think it's a common misconception that the idea of freedom of speech extends to platforms such as this. indeed many people don't seem to really understand the meaning of "freedom of speech." They argue all the time that "I can say whatever I want -- I have freedom of speech!!" ... well, that's true... you may speak whatever you want. But the person or people who provide an avenue for communication are in no way bound to allow you to say what you want in the space they paid for. this is, i would say, is the situation with CTW. it was created, is owned and operated by james, who entrusts the mods and admins with the power to try to help them run it in the way he intends. this is not a democracy. there is no right to free speech here. if you don't like, set up your own board and run it however you like. alasdair Quote "I've got medication, honey. I thought I'd seen it, but then had a quick look and missed it!!! Me being a dumbass! Maybe, just an idea, it's worth changing the icon to text, or making it a bit more obvious? Just that I knew it was there, but missed it so thought it wasn't again... Although I'm a relative newbie, I've been using the boards for a month now almost daily. I understand where most people are coming from with all this - that's both sides of the argument. I don't envy the task you've got to moving forwards from this issue. No matter which direction you take it (more moderation *or* staying as-is), you're not going to please everyone....
