ON A SERIOUS NOTE...WHO ABSTAINS FROM THE VOTE?

"we are the first political party to challenge the existing political and economic theology of globalisation and to instead call for its replacement with an emphasis on local production and economies. Under the Green's policies, beggar-your-neighbour globalisation is replaced by the more cooperative better-your-neighbour localisation."

i was with you right up to 'first'

In an effort to offer the other side of the argument.

Why not vote?

"Welcome to the NonVoter 2004 website!

Thoughtful, concerned, intelligent people may choose not to participate in a democratic political system. Here you will find some reasons why."

I personally don't think their argument is compelling enough and a little bit naive for myself to take an real interest in.

Today it's the non-voters who have logic on their side

"People who do not vote today, which may be 75% of the electorate, are easily seen as idle and irresponsible democrats. That's how many national politicians, especially on the government side, regard them. Ministers and managers even say it almost does not matter who you vote for, except in a handful of northern towns where some odious racists might creep in. Whatever you do, don't be apathetic. Apathy is a moral issue. It is also a missed opportunity. Get out to vote, and join your local community. Throw in your two bits' worth to make a difference. Who could deny the case for such a renewal of democratic energy? "

None of the Above, non-voters and the 2001 elections

"The June 2001 election saw a dramatic drop in turnout. Some decrease in voting had been widely predicted, but the size of the drop was so big it took most people by surprise and has served as a wake-up call to those who govern and represent us. There have long been governments resting on a minority of the electorate, but so long as turnout overall remained reasonably high, politicians could dismiss those who did not vote and not have to worry about their democratic legitimacy. But when six out of 10 young people do not vote, as well as, first indications suggest nearly one-third of women over 55 - traditionally the most civic-minded - then the alarm bells ring."

By far the most interesting read so far.

I don't do much on this planet, but David Blaine has taught me that I could do less!!

either way, the further the number of voters declines, those who have remained as simple fringe parties will get a larger say, and we really dont want to have a nasty wake up call like the french did...

whether or not party political thinking has swerved from the important matters, to simply getting noticed by thenext generation..(most likely)...everything else gets put on the backburner, and as we criticise the goventment over Iraq sitiuations, and discussing the forgotten labour manifesto, wot we ognna do about it as self thinking, "democratic" members of the public...(jeeesus...) [censored] stop whining and vote maaan!...abstaining the vote aint gonna do nobody no favours, cos we DONT have an non suitable candidate choice, and we DONT have a proper democracy..(ahem! House of lords)...it took over a hundred years of reforms, bills, pacts, rioting and comprimise to actually get polititians to believe that suffrage is not a priviledge but a right, so claim it...dont use it as a last resort option ..otherwise we may as well be a state government, with politicans forging our votes for us, and end up in the same cunted mess as america...

america! HA! dont get me started..grr
