I've been on less than a month yes...

It's not constructive in any way, it's being very very petty...

If you have such a big problem with the post y not contact an administrator or something?

He has already said that this post doesnt mean that blokes cant send him demos, he hasnt restricted himself to the option that he will only book female DJs from now on has he?

Agreed. All I am doing is pointing out the dubiousness of even mentioning gender in the advert. Okay, Luke's not getting many demos from women. Well I'd like to bet there are plenty of other groups of people he's not getting demos from either. So (to be devil's advocate) if he's going to represent one minority group, shouldn't he represent them all?

IMHO - of course not. It's all or nothing. He should advertise for " DJs" and leave it at that.

I think your point applies to a situation say if a bloke and a bird both went and studied for a degree in rocket science, both qualified with the same marks, went for the same job but the girl got it on the basis she was a girl.

Precisely. In fact this would be illegal and the male applicant could sue. What we're saying is, what is so special about a DJing job that makes it okay to sexually discriminate? Isn't it a job like any other?

Yes it's a job if you do it professionally...

But, I didnt say no males will be booked. I asked for demo's from females...

Our previous DJs are

Rascal, Burg, Andy Hames, Kippax Brothers, Ginge, Kaine, Stride, Alan Wilson, Dave Stewart... (they're all male!)

Therefore, females are the minority group....

Therefore Im trying to encourage women to send demos...

As for doing something positive for the site....Is booking DJs from here not a good thing?

I never had a "big problem" with the original post. Blink & I thought it would be interesting to constructively discuss (without any name-calling) the ethics of specifically targetting female DJs. Fair enough if you don't find it interesting, but I think you should at least be aware of the different views on the subject, if you're going to bandy around this notion of "representation", which (personally) I think is half-way to positive discrimination.

If you read Blink's thread on discrimination, you'll note that I actually put forward some arguments in your favour. I'm not having a big go at you personally.

The only thing that bothers me in the slightest, is that you (and others) have continually avoided the crux of this discussion:

Would it be okay to specifically target, say, white DJs?

Or Jewish DJs?

etc...

If not, then why is it okay to specifically target people based on gender?

But I guess you're not interested in discussing this - you're only interested in promoting your night - so I'll fetch my coat... laugh.gif

How many posts on this board are promoting my night?

As for discussing it, there is nothing to discuss. I was encouraging females to send demos, not guranteing a booking.

Which probably wouldnt be paid by the way (expenses only)..

If you want to talkm about discrimination why not go on to a board that's relevant instead of the djing one?

(just did a quick "search"...)

Almost all of them are either

1. promoting your night / hunting DJs, or

2. calling people "silly" or "petty" for having different views to your own.

[if you want to talkm about discrimination why not go on to a board that's relevant instead of the djing one?

Already have. But I was genuinely interested in your opinion on the matter, as you sparked the debate in the first place. If you think you have a good counter-argument then feel free to contribute to the "discrimination" thread. shrug.gif

P.S. I think discussing the ethics of targetting female DJs is pretty relevant on a thread entitled "FAO Female DJ's"!!

I only re call posting once advertising my night...

I do admit that I've posted another 2 times looking for DJs..

I was saying people are silly and petty because they are making a fuss over nothinbg that doesnt even affect them! Would you have sent a demo?
