flippant comments in serious forums

Agreed with Rachel, I don't want the "serious" forums to become dry and boring. There's nothing wrong with a passing joke or even the odd flippant comment.

IMHO the only problem is if:

1. the comment is insulting or degrading to the person with the problem (I think the "what's your number love" is a borderline case);

2. the comment is directly misleading, e.g. subjective and dangerous advice on drugs;

3. the thread gets completely derailed by silly banter (I plead guilty on a couple of counts!)

...that people cant get from those closest to them

given that CTW is a community, perhaps people feel that, by asking here, they are getting advice from the group of people they are closest to?

if every website had that attitude, where would people get their facts from? the web thrives on content!

sure, sites like erowid and bluelight have become de-facto standards for bullshit-free drug information but, again, sometimes people in a community like CTW need the reassurance - even if the information is second-hand - of hearing it from somebody close, somebody they trust.

you think the serious forums are a joke. i'm happy for you - take claire's advice and stay out of them.

just because they're a joke to you, doesn't mean they have to be a joke for everybody else, does it?

i agree. if there were only passing comments or "the odd" flippant comment, i would not have written my message.

regarding this thread:

http://community.clubtheworld.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB24&Number=271805&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=3#Post272921

some of the comments in there are flippant. i hate to use the word 'disgusting' as it's lost all currency online but some are definitely very disappointing.

it's becoming increasingly clear to me that some CTW participants give less thought to the subject matter when replying and only really care about maintaining their online persona and how what they write will be viewed by others: funny; heartless; bating; whatever

it's [censored] tiresome, frankly.

again, is it too much to ask people to keep [censored] on topics and keep their oh-so-hilarious gags out of serious forums? again, it seems it is...
