CTW Members Aleksandra Posted July 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 16, 2003 Hi, My boyfriend was a Royal Marine for 8 years and really doesn't recommend it. This won't change your mind of course (nor should it) but just in terms of adjusting expectations, maybe? It's not glam, it's extremely (with capital E) hard work and it also gets very boring, apparently. Too much time spent in deserts and jungles. Never a steady relationship either. My b/f says he enjoys being a clubber far, far more than he did being a fighter (although he was very lucky, actually never fought) Of course that's individual, you have your own reasons for going which may be - who knows? The challenge, or travel, or maybe even something very noble like defending good and justice, hmhm... Best of luck, hope you enjoy it, I'm sure you've researched into it, but it's maybe just worth knowing that it's a lot harder but a lot less interesting that people generally assume (my b/f's words) Take care

CTW Members Capn Jack Posted July 16, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted July 16, 2003 I was in the TA for three years loved it, all the drill, parade and excercises. Most of my friends are in the Forces and regail me with ordinary daily life of the Forces, of which I have a moderate experience of. I became interested in the Marines after a friend of mine joined, it wasn't the glamour that appealed to me (if there is any?) it was the camaraderie and the hard physical/mental work that appealed to me. Every job I've done in a non military capacity I've not really enjoyed, they just didn't push me hard enough, it was too easy and unrewarding. Thanks for the bringing up your boyfriends experiences, I have friends who've left and have hated what they did and I have friends who have left and hated civvy life and re-joined. Who knows how it'll turn out for me, but I'm more than willing to find out. Quote I don't do much on this planet, but David Blaine has taught me that I could do less!!
