Can I just clear something up, I never backed down from my original comment, I was joking. If you lot actually knew me you would realise I would never actually back down from anything I say if i thought it was true.

Everyone who is one here who does actually know me will agree with me on that too.

Im suprised that you have all taken it so seriously when I assumed that with u all thinking you were the "intelligent" people on the site, you would have realised that it was tounge in cheek.

Nor was it a personal attack on any specific members who frequent the serious forum because to be honest I couldnt name that many who actually go in there.

I started it to cause a bit of commotion, because I was bored and it worked. It back fired however because I found it more boring reading some of your longwinded humourless replies, than just not bothering with it in the first place.

Anyway in future ill leave u all to discuss the meaning of life in the serious forum and ill continue to randomly abuse people.

I'm really going to stick my neck out on the line here, but there's something I want to say.

Maybe it's crazy that I'm even getting involved and maybe I should just forget about the whole CTW thing, but I'm strangely addicted to this board so I'm going to say this as honestly and directly as I can.

I haven't met this crowd as yet apart from Rick, so I'm sure that some of you will just dismiss my comment as none of my business - the board seems to already "belong" to certain people. But as I used to really like CTW and as a "wannabe" member, I'll say it anyway.

I think you are coming to a point where, to new people like myself, it's getting difficult to tell who is joking in their put-downs and who actually means it. And that makes a big difference to whether people will want to meet you or not.

Maybe some of you don't care about that, or maybe don't even want any new people to come and meet you. But if I remember right, James' vision was to include as many new clubbers as possible. If that's still the case, then it will depend, as a bottom line, on how friendly you come across as.

For example: I'm a passionate clubber who would like to meet you and go clubbing with you. Rick has accidentally already met me and can vouch for that I actually do go to clubs and don't just have this "virtual" existence rolleyes.gif

But, I tend to post in the serious forum. I really like it there, and don't think that "serious" means crap or boring. Just because I have a few serious thoughts in life, I don't think it makes me a nerd, and I hope I don't make boring company in real life. I don't know - Rick, did you think I was a nerd when you met me? wink.gif

But that's besides the point anyway.

The Serious forum is a safe place for me to get to know others without having to get into your sometimes VERY aggressive banter. I am not a timid person, but frankly, exchanging putdowns with strangers doesn't interest me. If something is going to motivate me to communicate with strangers in the first place, it's if they seem friendly. There's enough wankers in real life without having to deal with them on forum boards (this is a general comment - I'm not calling anyone a wanker - I'll reserve judgement until I meet you!)

When some of the people on CTW are joking, it's fairly clear that it's a joke. Also, if it's clear that they know each other, then whatever they say TO each other is ok and often funny - Creamy's comments being a case in point. Certain comments just don't seem to carry any malice and they're very amusing. Others, I'm not so sure.

Say, situations like Jay's windup comment. To be honest, I thought he was probably joking but I wasn't actually sure. I didn't take it as a personal attack, but then again it could have been for all I know?!! In this FAO post now, Rick refers to "those sad people (in the serious forum)". Why? And also, I now have no idea if he's joking or not. That's the essence of my point, that it's becoming impossible to tell. And frankly it makes a difference.

If I'm mates with someone, I happily accept teasing, piss take, banter, whatever. If I've never met you in my life and I'm just making the first cautios steps towards meeting you, and stuff feels un-friendly, of course it'll put me off. Maybe I'm an isolated case here, maybe all other people who are debating whether to come and meet you or not, think it's all fantastic? - well, these are my thoughts anyway.

Perhaps it's some sort of rule of "initiation" that you only want thick skinned people that will "take it on"?! But that's crazy, why would anyone bother.

It's not at all about being sensitive or afraid of banter, or not being able to respond. The levels of intelligence and wittyness on this site vary from member to member so I'm sure there's some I could handle wink.gif But there's zero attraction in that, personally.

What do others think? And is the purpose of the site still to get likeminded clubbers together? What does likeminded mean in this climate?

Thanks

A.

Alexsandra I haven't been a member nearly as long as you but I do consider myself a MEMBER

I at first thought just like you, but now I don't at all, I write what I think, if people don't like it then they don't, I take the 'banter' as a joke until otherwise stated unless it's in the Serious Forum, then again I also took Jays post as not serious shrug.gif

I first thought it was a North South divide but that is so far off the mark as i've met many from all over and each and every one was really nice and friendly (whether they thought that of me who knows paranoid.gif) but nothing would stop me going to a meet up if I wanted to and especially not because of things said in a forum, the saying 'never judge a book by its cover' is what I go by wink.gif

Exactly. Totally agree with everything you said but especially points made above. Again, and forgive me if I'm belaboring a point, but I really don't understand why anyone cares about which forums other users spend their time browsing and/or posting in. This topic, in some form or another, has now become the gist of several posts within various forums on this site. Not to mention that certain others are now congratulating and hailing the wit of any post that pokes at and teases the so-called "serious forum people" as if it is somehow much "cooler" not to engage in serious discussions but rather simply carry on with general random ironic banter. The original post (and its back-slapping, ass-kissing cousins) carry implied and sometimes not so implied insults to the "serious forum people". To wit, that they are 1. elevating themselves above other members in terms of intelligence 2. boring 3. lack lives and 4. unable to take a joke. These are all patently false, but again (and forgive me for being "serious"), what is the point? Why is it so wonderful and witty to comment on where people spend their time on this site?

i agree with a lot of what aleksandra has said here - this comment sums it up pretty well.

it's obvious that certain people on CTW enjoy deliberately winding people up and leaving stupid comments in serious forums for amusement even though they've been asked not to a number of times.

if that's not the very definition of boredom, i'm not sure what is...

life must truly suck if that's what you look forward to frown.gif

it's often said that the most vocal homophobics are, themselves, latent homosexuals and striking out is their response.

perhaps there's some parallel here? perhaps those who criticise 'serious forum' participants are simply jealous of those who put a little more time into their thoughts. perhaps they are too afraid or too weak to admit that, inside, they actually respect such participants?

i'm no psychologist - i could be way off. what do others think?

i echo chadt's point - why would anybody be interested, let alone get annoyed by, another user's choice of forum?
