So you'd be allowed to play that out in a club?

yes

doh - it posted b4 i added why lol

Reason being, I own a copy of the original recording and would not be making any money from the 'bootleg' cd copy in any way, so would not be in breach of copyright

actually i thought this was true up until recently, but it's not. you're perfectly entitled to make a copy for personal use, but if you are playing out you must use originals.

i only know this because i DJ at a student union and we had a tip-off from a DJ who works for us, who also works at other clubs in the city. at this other club one of the other DJs who works there suffered a visit from PRS (i think?) who asked to see the DJ's CD collection and it was all burnt copies, so he didn't damage his originals, even though he owned them. they still said that he was required to play originals and NOT copies and the club was fined a fair whack.

it's totally stupid but apparently true.

or it could be a complete lie by my boss, but i wouldn't see why he'd make it up.

nah - its perfectly legal!! Once you buy copyrighted material, that is yours to use in any way as long as you do not sell it on for personal gain

You have a look on soundclick and you find sum rather nice choons that people have made. You download then burn them onto CD....

Assuming that they havnt had them copyrighted.... Is this legal?
