My view on cd decks........

As a few people will know I've just purchased a cd deck to compliment my set up. The last time I had the chance to use one of these was years and years ago and I thought that they were crap!

How time and technology have moved on eek.gif

I used it for the first time yesterday and to be perfectly honest found it so easy, without even trying, my very first mix was as good as my best vinyl mixes. It was no fun compared to vinyl as there was just no challenge in getting it right. For people that can't beat match it must be an absolute dream, the beat counters just take all the skill out of it!

CDs thumbsdown.gif

They're no fun and it takes no skill and very little talent to do a good quality mix....if I had a pair I reckon even my mum could give me a run for my money rotfl.gif

A great add on to bring an extra dimension to vinyl mixing and I know I'm going to have alot of use out of it and I look forward to playing any of the producers tunes that are on the board, if you read this and have any tunes then please let me know if you're prepared to let me use them thumbs.gif

I may get some grief for this post and it's in no way a slagging at people who do use them as it's down to personal choice, but as a vinyl dj it's my honest opinion, long live vinyl! notworthy.gif

Well, you know how much I treasure my CDJ.... true, there isnt much skill needed to hit a perfect mix, but the fact is, I can play track months in advance of people thanks to it - seems to be the only way to make a set stand out a little bit!!

Not only that, but vinyl production prices keep on rising - how much do they have to charge for a record before DJs start to give up and revert to cd or something else??

Dont forget as well though, cd decks aint really designed to take over vinyl - both cd + vinyl decks have advantages and disadvantages, but using both in a set is only gonna benefit you more!!

The only problem is when your in a club and some tw@t plays his/her last tune from cd - NOTHING pisses me off more then people who do that.... if you dont know the track, you cant judge how/when its gonna drop, and where best mixing points are......please dont do that to people....ever laugh.gif

You're using your cdj as a compliment to your decks...which is how I'll be using mine. If you've got the contacts to get hold of a tune to burn off and use months in advance then yes, thats a true benefit from having one.

Good point but as soon as vinyl starts to die and people buy cds don't you think the cd prices will rise! Yeah copying someone elses cd is ok for home use but the copyright issue will be clamped down on for djs that play out.

I agree about them not being designed to take over, but when I saw how 2 could be set up and with the beat matching technology, you could belt out a faultless mix with no skill it made me think of how easy its become to be a 'dj'. People will take this easy route as it takes no effort!

You have to know your tunes very well to use them and I agree that that would be very annoying laugh.gif

Also, majority of clubs dont even have ONE cd deck, let along a pair of them..... djs that cant use vinyl will be severely limited into bookings they can take!!

Agreed, I was really just stating how easy cd decks make it for ppl. Without having to worry too much about the beatmatching the other parts of djing will come alot quicker.

The post wasn't really talking about djs who wish to/are playing out because they all know how important vinyl is.

I think this is an interesting issue, about the beatmatching etc, cos it will make people ask questions about what talents a DJ really needs?

I write music, but have very little "playing" ability, so I use sequencers to tidy up my style. Many people say that this is cheating. I say who gives a [censored] as long as the music sounds good.

I think the same applies here. If/When I get into DJing properly (alternative/electro DJing), I will look at getting some CD decks, cos the majority of music I own is on CD/MP3 (I already know some DJ's who turn up with just a laptop!!) If I don't have to worry about learning to beat match, it will allow me to concentrate on the important thing, which is set structuring (I have done some simple DJing in the past, and people say that my sets are well paced, and that the songs sit will next to each other, and surely that is the real talent of the DJ)

Maybe this is offtopic.gif

The answer to everything is personal choice really, I like to use vinyl because to 'beatmatch' by ear is a talent imo. Technology always makes things easier for ppl...where i work nc machines have taken out all of the skill of machining....I guess its a 'needs suit' situation.

Set structure is very important I will definitely agree on this, some sets sound better than others and thats all part and parcel of 'the whole package', being able to beatmatch without the aid of technology is something I include in this.

I was just really shocked at the ease of use of these and I'm bound to be biased towards vinyl because that is what I have always used and really enjoy. If I had to use cds all the time I would become bored and probably give up because the challenge just isn't there for me. End of the day it's just how I feel about it all. shrug.gif

It's a interesting point, I have a big collection of CD's and i'm happy keeping them for my car and my stereo...Did have CD decks a while back but it's just not the same. There's nothing like running ur hands back and forth along the vinly and letting go to hear the beats perfectly in time...also I don't get the same buzz going out shopping for CD's as I do flicking through the Vinyl section...I loveface.gif shoppin for new vinyl smile.gif

this is surely as religious an issue as mac versus pc, etc.

frankly, who really cares what equipment the DJ is using? in my opinion, it's the net effect that matters - what the punters hear and how the DJ responds to that.

he could be using yoghurt pots and elastic bands for all i care - if the music moves people, that's it.

anything else is, in my very humble opinion, snobbery. i've heard DJs play trainwrecks on vinyl and epic sets on CD and vice versa. what does that prove?
