Nah, didn't go to Uni... Didn't see the point, and got offered a poorly paid, but top-notch for experience job whilst still at college, jumped at the opportunity, and never looked back since.

What's the point in going to Uni, studying a degree in subject X, leave uni, decide that you never want to work in the field of subject X again, and then attempt to find a job in every other subject going.... And making out you're much more qualified for it than anyone else, because you've got a degree in a totally-non-related subject? Oh, and you've still got no experience. But having a degree you won't start at the bottom and work your way up... You want a decent-ish wage from day one, and want to start at a level at which you get your own office...

Okay, I know that was way-over-generalisation, but I know, and work with, a lot of people with that exact same attitude...

i've been to uni, but cunningly dropped out before final exams. never looked back, but i appreciate some things need a degree, and some need experience.

i've always been a somewhat anti-student, but i don't know if thats cos of me turning my back on uni, or the fact most the people i knew at uni i don't like as much as the people i know who generally didn't go to uni (there are always exceptions!)

lectures. god they were too boring.

cyber on the inside

desperately trying to fit in on the outside

(failing to acknowledge the "don't post if you have been" bit), I'd like to just to add a couple of points though:

aside from really essential degrees, such as medicine, law etc where there clearly is a need for university (or some other controlled academic environment) there are other virtues that I am not sure are available to you unless you live either in a big city or go work in a very big organisation. These relate to meeting different types of people and learning how to deal with them and the ability to appreciate and understand different cultures.

In small towns (like Margate, where I originate from prior to Uni and London) there is a massive gulf socially between those that made it to University and those that decided to stay and work. It might not be an issue in London but believe me narrowmindedness and ignorance / hate etc. really prevalent in such places - I'm talking racism, xenophobia, homophobia, ageism, sexism - and from people I used to like. There are obviously people who went to Uni that have these traits, but I believe Uni changed a lot of people that would otherwise be like it.

So, my point - yes Uni can be a waste of time. It might just be a way or wasting time until you decide what you want to do (expensive these days), but please don't decide not to go to Uni just because you think it is purely about a boring course that might have little use in the future.

industry experience is worth far more than any qualification (IMO). I know people with degrees who cant get [censored] at the moment shrug.gif

then again i've always hated/failed all exams ! (its just NOT real life is it!)

It depends on the degree and your choice of career. You won't get into upper management without a good degree. Also, you're not going to be a doctor/lawyer/anything in science other than a technician without a degree.

It gives you a massive advantage when it comes to professional work.

When it comes to middle of the road jobs that's where they come in handy, there is a massive derth of skilled workers in this country and too many people doing mickey mouse courses and getting degrees without knowing how to construct a sentence or perform simple maths puzzles.

Like me. I just spent three years at Uni and most the jobs I've applied for don't want people with degrees they want people with experience. U'd think that would really piss me off but don't regret going to Uni one bit cos for me going to Uni was so much more than getting a degree. I got to move out of home, live in a completely new city, make loads of new mates and well its made the person I am now.

Uni gets you nowhere, you leave with no job, you arse about moaning about it and then thye piss off on some round the world trip. They then get back and get some part time job working for the local council. Yeah Uni is really worth it.

Whilst I agree on some of your other points, that is a load of bollocks, to put it politely...

You might not walk in off the street to an upper management job... But working with a fair few corporates, the only upper management personnel that ever last are self made and have worked their way up - maybe not from the very bottom of ranks, but most haven't got degrees and opted for the experience track instead.

In your experience maybe not but what is fact:

- Graduates earn more over the course of their lives.

- Graduates occupy the highest positions in the biggest companies worldwide.

- In this country MPs are almost exclusively graduates.

- Having a good degree from a good university is worth infintely more than 3 years experience as an office junior.

Why do you think the best universities have links with the companies such as PriceWaterHouseCoopers, Eversheds, Smithkline Beecham etc etc? Unis head hunt the highest calibre of people from universities. Why? In general, the most talented people go to university.

Also, a degree gives you a route into most professions without you having to actually have experience in that field as long as you show enough aptitude (this seems to be excluding ppl getting [censored] degrees at [censored] unis).

I think a lot of people forget that university isn't just a a place to learn, it's a place to network, learn to live on your own in a safe environment and develop as a person.

Fair play to people that don't go to university but anyone that doesn't is seriously missing out.
