What do you think of the techier Hard House?

Mr Happy: I don't know many specific examples of techno-influenced hard house (apart from some Nick Sentience), but I'm inclined to agree.

I love the "hard house" end of techno - dirty and gritty and driving, but still not devoid of funk.

But having heard some of the dodgier techno-influenced hard house, I'd say there are a lot of people jumping on the techno bandwagon ("cool, I'll just make my track more minimal") who you can tell don't really "get" techno. Often I find the tracks are too fast, ruining any subtlety or "techiness" of the groove.

I reckon there's a fine line speed-wise; it depends on the track, but in general I find techno a bit dodgy above 145bpm. Some of my favourite techno tracks are only around 135bpm but they still sound rock hard! thumbs.gifyay.gif

just to point 1 thing out:

i cant stand the hard house producers interpretation of techno. but i love the techno producers interpretation of hardhouse. ie guy mcaffer, chris liberator, D.A.V.E. the drummer, etc thumbs.gif

in fairness, the stuff they make is squat/acid based and has nowt to do with hh.....

good to see we agree on the main topic tho :-)

BTW - I'm not just having a dig at hard house producers here.

Over the last couple of years, as the popularity of progressive house has declined, a number of prog producers/labels have leapt on the tech-house bandwagon, turning their hands to some of the lamest "techy" productions I have ever heard.

The problem is always the bandwagon-jumpers - trying to make stuff they think will sell rather than stuff they are actually any good at producing.

It's just that a DJ needs to throw in a bit of variety into his/her set..Ok, fair enough if they're only playing 40 mins or so, then it's kewl yea, but if their playing a marathon set, it's really going to start to sounds "samey".

U get wot I'm saying ?

Variation in any genre is good.

Some of the producers I speak to have said that what could be classed as 'proper' hard house is on the decline. There are a few producers (Paul King and Ian M for instance) that have retained the original tough, bouncy style of hard house.

More and more these days, the hard house that I see coming out is either hard trance or hard tech. This is not nessecarily a bad thing, as all musical genres develop, but it is just a sign of the 'phase' (if you will) that the hard dance scene as a whole is going to.

Harder. Faster. Better. Stronger. Badder. Smarter. Wub Wub

imo all dance music is samey.

its all artificial drum loops and the same sequencers and samplers

u ask a metal head to listen to 1 of the most diverse dance sets u can find and he wont know 1 tune from another.

well to me techno isnt samey, but to the hardhouse heads it is. the problem with techy hardhouse is the hardhouse heads r jumping on the bandwaggon without ne prior experence or appretiation 4 the genre and cant work it out

just my tuppance worth ne ways thumbs.gif
