CTW Members Mad_Clubber Posted September 10, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 10, 2003 I was at this crappy club a few weeks ago with some friends of mine. Just your typical semi-classy bar, full of pretentious, stuck up people trying to look cool Anyway..they were playing typical 50-cent, Britney Spears, Madonna pop crap...the DJ was just playing CD's....just fading one song into the other..not beatmatching, no skills whatsoever. So I walk up to the DJ (the guy was like in his 40's....didnt look like much of a DJ at all!)....just to chat. I asked him about the mixer he was using (which was obviously a VEstax 175....but I wanted to see if he knew...which he didnt) and I told him that I was a DJ too, but I didnt work at any clubs just yet. So I asked him how much he made, and he told me around £100-£150 a night...CASH! £150 for like 4 hours "work"...doing nothing but playing CD's.....thats not bad! Another example.......I went to some other crappy club with some friends...a place where my friend knows the DJ. This club was more hip-hop, so the DJ was spinning the usual MTV crappy P-Diddy "hip-hop" stuff. So my friend introduced me to the DJ...we started chatting. He told me that he didnt even like what he was spinning...he usually spins house and techno at house parties....but he plays at this crappy club on weekends to make some cash. So my question to you is....would you sell out? Would you buy popular music and crappy records and play music you hate for money? Or would you not reduce yourself to that level? CTW Photographers Crill Posted September 10, 2003 CTW Photographers Share Posted September 10, 2003 Fair enough if you want to concentrate on DJ'ing full time you need to take whatever money comes you way. I don't think it means you selling out your just paying the bills.

If that is "selling out", does that mean I'm selling out by keeping my day job when I'd much rather be a full-time producer & DJ?! Show me the money! CTW Members Blink Posted September 10, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 10, 2003 Money = food/equipment/vinyl/free time. You bet I would "sell out" if it gave me more time to concentrate on my music
CTW Members Phil rr Posted September 11, 2003 CTW Members Share Posted September 11, 2003 mmm...just cos you're a hard house DJ, doesn't mean u live in ur ideal world and never play anything under 150bpm. being a DJ in the first place must be pretty close to many peoples ideal jobs. if u decide "I'm going to be a DJ and only play 'real trance', ur a bit of a tit. CTW Members Mad_Clubber Posted September 11, 2003 Author CTW Members Share Posted September 11, 2003 I think some people are DJ's and have to make a living from doing so and are left with little choice regarding what they play. Most people go through the stage when gaining valuable experience in a club atmosphere. They play numerous requests for commercial music and tunes deemed fit by club management but some of them will continue and earn themselves superstar status where they can get away with playing their own choice of tunage.
